EARL MATTHEW CHEEVER , 82, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda. He was born April 14, 1926, in Elgin, Ill., to Florence (nee: Houk) and Earl Sylvester Cheever . The family moved to Fort Wayne when he was four years old. Earl graduated from South Side High School in 1944, and immediately joined the U.S. Army and served with the 5th Armored Division, Co. "C," 47th Armored Battalion, until his separation in June of 1946. He obtained his BSME from Purdue University in 1951. Earl re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force/Air National Guard in 1954, serving in the 122nd TAC Fighter Group in Fort Wayne. He became the Deputy Commander for Maintenance for the 131 TAC Fighter Wing in Missouri Air National Guard in 1974, and served as Colonel until his military retirement in 1983. He worked four-and-one-half years longer at Boeing Military Aircraft Co., serving as coordinator between the company and the Air National Guard. Earl moved to Florida in 1991 after full retirement, and enjoyed all that Florida has to offer. He was a member of the MOAA, Purdue Alumni, Charlotte County Republican Club, Punta Gorda Elks and Sigma Alpha Epsilon, as well as a lifetime member of the American Legion (most recently Post 110). His greatest satisfaction came from serving Faith Lutheran Church of Punta Gorda as a trustee and Elder, and was on the building committee. Earl will be remembered by his family and friends for his great sense of humor and for his genuine love for life. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Zola ; four children, Cathy (Michael) Morrissey of Fort Wayne, Vicki Lynn Cheever of St. Louis, Mo., Sandra Irene (Robert) Decker of Russiaville, Ind. and William Earl (Gay) Cheever of La Belle, Fla.; six grandchildren; and seven great- grandchildren. A private service was held in Fort Wayne. A Celebration of his Life is planned at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at Faith Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Faith Lutheran Church Building Fund, 4005 Palm Drive, Punta Gorda, FL 33950. Arrangements by D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road.
