Mystery Photos
Banner Church Chris McCarter's grandfather, John McCarter, grew up in Gatlinburg and has located an old family photo which was probably taken in the late teens or early 1920s at the latest. The photo was taken before he was born. The picture belonged to Chris' great grandfather, George Washington McCarter, who passed away in 1982 at 97 years old. The picture was taken at a Fourth of July celebration outside of the old Banner Baptist Church. The church was between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge at the time on Highway 441. The church was torn down sometime around the late 1950s or early 1960s according to Chris' grandfather when the new highway was built. There are probably around 50 people in the photo. Chris' grandfather remembers the names of a couple of people in the photo including Chris' great grandfather, a great uncle, and a man named Rose "JR" Maples who owned a store which was located on 441 not far from the church.
