  1. 1.  Kitty Adeline Rhodes was born Abt 1835; died Abt 1910; was buried Stonemountain, Buncombe County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

    Adeline applied for a pension #359, dated 13 July 1885, and was living in
    Daisy, North Carolina. William B. Searcy witnessed for her. Again, "Broad
    River, North Carolina, June 19, 1901, to Thomas Morriss, Marion, North
    Carolina, written by D. L. Clements, stating they were sorrection her pension
    application proving that she was the widow of Caleb (Caliph) Ownbey ... that
    Thomas K. Patton was his captain, that the regiment was made up in Buncombe
    County, that W. B. Searcy was standing by Caleb's side in Combany C, 60
    Regiment, when Ownby was shot down and killed in battle and W. B. Searcy says
    he saw Caleb shot and killed and that he helped to bury Ownby and will make
    oath to this if necessary ... that Mrs. Ownby had been drawing a stay pension
    ever since the law that granted it was enacted ... that Dr. Freeman witnessed
    it also."

    Adeline had other children, parentages unknown to me. She was a midwife and it
    was her reputation she never lost a baby. George Dewey Ownbey owes her much,she delivered him. Caleb had a grandson, "Little Caliph" who died in 1909.
    Parent not named ... Broad River, now extinct, was situated at the junction of
    Highway #9, the road from Old Frot and Moffitt Hill, McDowell County, North
    Carolina, where the Broad River crosses the highway.

    In census reading, I located a Rhodes line that was Indian, first name Alberta
    (male). According to G. D. Owenby, "Adeline was of Indian Blood." There were
    several Rhodes families in Henderson County, sons of Sheriff Rhodes of
    Henderson County, around 1905. While in North Carolina, I saw hanging on the
    wall, a picture (in Aunt Carrie Lee Nanney's home) of Adeline, she is in a
    group, the Indian features are very strong - GE White. Adeline claimed the T.
    B. came thru the Rhodes side of the family.

    Buried in churchyard in Stonemountain, North Carolina.

    Daniel Rufus Ownbey is buried in "The Old Field's Cemetery" near Bat Cave,
    Rutherford, North Carolina. His first wife, Saphronia, is also buried there
    but his second wife, Anty, preferred being buried by her infant son in Stone
    Mountain churchyard cemetery, Buncombe County, North Carolina.

    be real vindictive - was selfish - but other qualities she had were that she
    sometimes loved her husband and family to a point of possiveness. When the
    gold rush took place, the Moffitts were among those wh headed the call, before
    1890.

    Born on homeplace near Hickory Nut Mountain. Buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.

    Carmia was her name given at birth. After her parents death, all her sisters
    were separated into various homes. She stayed with an aunt, Cora Nevada
    (Moffitt) Vess (Mrs. Canney Vess) on Crooked Creek. Later she moved and lived
    with a woman who called her Connie Eldora. By the time she married Henry
    Thomas White, she had changed her name again to Connie Etta, as her children
    knew her.

    Connie Etta met her husband while she was a waitress working in Old Fort,
    McDowell, North Carolina, in a boarding house where Henry Thomas White was
    living. Before they were married, they had purchased a house and then were
    married. Four years later their home is where Ralph C. White was born. All
    children were born in this house. The house still stands and has been kept in
    excellent condition by the present owner.

    According to her sister, Carrie Lee, Carmia was headstong and beligerent and
    that at one time Bailey Nesbitts took her for some time in her home, but
    couldn't make her happy.

    Carmia is buried in the same plot with her husband and his second wife in Oak
    Hill Cemetery. Their child separates Carmia from her husband.

    When we were in North Carolina in 1968, in April, Aunt Carrie Lee was living in
    a new home, and was an interesting person - very guarded with her history of
    her people. What has been given had to be a fight ... and so I was corrected
    on many of my notes and dates, but she did give me some new facts which I
    carefully wrote down in my notebook. We were in her kitchen sitting on the
    long "Beacon type" bench with my husband and teenage son, Bob, across from us.
    Aunt Carrie Lee and Cuyva stood ready to aid us. I was a little astonished at
    all this kindness, and perhaps, a little uneasy at my manerisms - I didn't want
    to eat. I'd rather sit and "soak up" the tranquility of the home, the land and
    and the easy hospitality granted to their own, Ralph White, and their alien
    kinship (even of a Yankee descendent). The table was set with home grown and
    home made foods. I relished it very much, it is much the same as we eat at
    home when dad does the cooking. I cannot reproduce the same effect as our
    hillbilly daddy can.

    contacted her first, as it might have taken more assurance - I'm sure.
