Thomas Shields enlisted in the Revolutionary War under General John Sevier. On
7 October 1780, he fought at the Battle of King's Mountain. After being
mustered out he spent a year hunting and exploring in what is now the Great
Smoky Mouintains National Park. For nearly two years more he wandered through
the area of the mountains returning to his father's home in Sevier County,
Tennessee.

In 1795, Thomas and his two small sons were boiling sap in the sugar maple
orchard on Birch Creek when he was shot from ambush. Ordering his sons to run,
he rolled behind a log within reach of his rifle. He shot one of the Indians
before he was killed. Thomas was the only Shields son killed by Indians. His
death can be fixed fairly accurately by a newspaper clipping found in the Knox
Gazette dated 6 March 1797.

"Just as this paper was going to press we received information that Thos.
Shields was killed by Indians in Sevier County, They cut his head nearly off,
took out his bowells, otherwise shockingly cut and mangled him. The youth lived
with his parents Robert Shields and Nancy Shields at Upper Middle Creek section
of the County."

We are not sure when John Shields came to Kentucky. Work by earlier researchers shows that he was born near present-day Harrisonburg, Virginia, in 1769, the sixth son of Robert and Nancy Stockson Shields, and one of ten brothers and a sister. Harrisonburg, by the way, located in the lovely Shenandoah Valley, is Louisville's twin city in the truest sense of the word. Both Harrisonburg and Louisville were given corporate life in a single act of the Virginia legislature in 1780.1

By then, young Shields was eleven years old. Shortly after, in 1784, the family emigrated to Pigeon Forge in the Tennessee foothills of the Smoky Mountains. Here he learned blacksmithing at a shop owned by a brother-in-law, Samuel Wilson, and also operated Wilson's grist mill. He was an apt pupil of blacksmithing and his skill proved unusually valuable to the Lewis and Clark Expedition.2

By 1790 he was in Kentucky and about that time married a girl named Nancy, family name unknown. The only reference I have been able to find to a John Shields locally is from a session of the County Court on November 8, 1797, when persons named to appraise the estate of a John Williams, deceased, included John Shields. Was he our man? Perhaps, but there is no way to be certain.3

In any event, he became a private soldier in the Expedition, even though Lewis had earlier called for only unmarried men. He was, at age 34, the oldest man in the party and was the blacksmith, gunsmith, and all-around mechanic. His work as blacksmith brought in badly needed corn during the winter sojourn of 1804-05 at Fort Mandan. On February 5, 1805, Meriwether Lewis noted in his journal that the party was "visited by the natives, who brought in a considerable quantity of corn for the work the blacksmith had done for them … They are peculiarly attached to a battle ax formed in a very inconvenient manner in my opinion, it is fabricated of iron only." There were several such entries. And on April 8, 1806, Clark noted that: "John Shields cut out my rifle and brought hir to shoot very well. The party owes much to the injinuity of this man, by whome their guns are repaired when they get out of order which is very often."

At the conclusion of the Expedition, Lewis wrote of Shields: "Has received the pay only of a private. Nothing was more peculiarly useful to us, in various situations, then the skill and ingenuity of this man as an artist, in repairing our guns, accroutements, &c. and should it be thought proper to allow him something as an artificer, he has well deserved it." There is no record that Lewis's suggestion was acted upon. Shields' skill as a hunter comes through the journals, as well. There are at least seventy references to his hunting accomplishments.4

As an acute observer of anything new that he had come across, Shields proved a "medicine man" to another Kentuckian on the Expedition-William Bratton. Bratton, as one of the saltmakers on the Pacific Coast, came down with back pains so acute that he could scarcely walk. On the return journey Bratton traveled by canoe or horseback. When the Expedition halted in present-day Idaho at "Camp Chopunnish" to wait for the snow to melt in the high Bitterroots, Shields suggested a treatment for Bratton. He said he had seen men with similar complaints cured by violent sweats.

Lewis detailed the process in his journal: Shields dug a circular hole four feet deep, lighted a fire to heat the surrounding earth, put in a seat and willow hoops across the top to hold blankets. Bratton was placed in the hole and given water to sprinkle on the hot earth to create steam. The steam and plunges into cold water cured the back pain. Lewis added that during the treatment Bratton was given "copious draughts" of a strong tea of horse mint. This was also Shields' idea and he told Lewis he had seen "Sinneca snake root" used when mint was not available.5

Following the Expedition's return, Shields spent a year trapping in Missouri with famed Kentuckian Daniel Boone, who was evidently related to him in some way. [Recent research places Shields back home by the spring of 1807.] Upon his return to the Falls of the Ohio area he spent some time with Daniel's lesser-known brother, Squire Boone, in Indiana-in what is now Harrison County some thirty miles west of Louisville. Shields died in December 1809 and is probably buried in the rather neglected Little Flock Baptist Church graveyard south of Corydon, Indiana, in Harrison County. I might note that Squire Boone was, among other things, a Baptist preacher and likely presided at Shields' burial. John and Nancy Shields were the parents of a daughter named Janette who married her cousin John Tipton, a man who became a power in Indiana politics.6

smaller brothers to the Yadkin Settlement in North Carolina. The next year he
helped to bring them on pack animals to Shields Fort in Sevier County,
Tennessee, via the Watauga and Traders Trail. In 1808, he settled in Indiana,
building his own Shields Fort on the present site of Seymour, Indiana.

GEN. JOHN TIPTON was born in Sevier County, Tenn.,August 14, 1780. His father, Joshua Tipton, was a native ofMaryland. When quite young, being impelled by a desire toparticipate in the excitements of pioneer life, he removed to Ten-nessee. He was one of the most formidable adversaries of Indianstrategy, to which he finally fell a victim in 1793. In the fallof 1807 John Tipton, with his mother, two sisters and a half-brother, removed to Indiana Territory, and settled near a placeon the Ohio River known as Brinley's Ferry. He purchasedfifty acres of land, for which he paid by chopping and splittingrails at 50 cents a hundred. In 1811 he became a member ofCapt. Spencer's company of mounted riflemen, known as YellowJackets. This company did excellent service in the campaignagainst the Indians on the Upper Wabash. In the battle of Tip-pecanoe, November 7, 1811, all the company officers above En-sign Tipton having, been killed, he was promoted to the captaincyby Gen. Harrison in the hottest of the fight, and by his superiortact and courage maintained the reputation of his men. He con-tinued in service until the close of the war in that locality. Sub-sequently he was promoted, by regular gradations in the Terri-torial and State militia, to the position of major-general in 1822.At the first election under the State constitution; in 1816, he
was made sheriff of Harrison County, and was re-elected in 1818.
In 1821 he was chosen to represent Harrison County in the StateLegislature, and during the same year was one of the commis-sioners that located the State capital of Indiana. In the sessionwhich followed he was appointed commissioner- on the part ofIndiana to meet a like commissioner from Illinois to locate theboundary line between the two States. The duty was satisfacto-rily performed. In the spring of 1824, without his solicitationor knowledge, he was appointed by President Monroe to theIndian agency, then located at Fort Wayne, which embraced thePottawattomie, Miami and other Indian tribes on the Upper Wa-bash and Tippecanoe Rivers. Soon after his appointment he re-moved to Fort Wayne, and remained until March, 1828, when,at his instance, the agency was removed to Logansport. He wasone of the commissioners appointed by John Quincy Adams tosuperintend the treaties with the Indians in his jurisdiction, andto his eminent ability were chiefly due the important provisionsof the treaties of 1826, whereby valuable lands were opened tothe public. He continued in charge of the agency until Decem-ber, 1831, when he was elected United States Senator, to fill thevacancy occasioned by the death of Hon. James Noble. In De-cember, 1832, he was elected for a full term of six years, fromMarch 4, 1833. As a senator he ranked high, distinguishinghimself by his accurate knowledge of men and their relations topublic affairs, and in working for the best good of the nation,without reference to politics. During the summer of 1838 hewas delegated by the President to remove certain disaffected Pot-tawattomie and Miami lndians to the land which had been re-served west of the Mississippi River. Though these Indians haddisposed of their lands, they were unwilling to emigrate, andthe contractor had found it utterly impossible to proceed further.Gen. Tipton, however, readily comprehending the situation, over-came the difficulties by strategy, and, with a celerity scarcelyanticipated, removed the remnants of the once mighty tribes. InMarch, 1839, he returned to his home in Logansport, and com-improving his vast landed estate on the Wabash. Hadhe lived to execute his plans for developing the immense resourcesof that locality, he would have given to Cass County in general,and Logansport in particular, a place in the industrial world un-equaled in Indiana. He died, April 5, 1839, from a sudden ill-ness induced by exposure. Gen. Tipton was twice married-in 1822 to Miss Shields, who died soon after, and in April,1825, to Miss Matilda Spencer, daughter of Capt. Spear Spencer,who was killed at the battle of Tippecanoe. They had four chil-dren, all of whom are now dead, excepting one daughter, who isthe wife of Capt. Thomas S. Dunn, of the United States Army.In 1817 Gen. Tipton received the several degrees of AncientCraft Masonry, in Pisgah Lodge No.5, at Corydon, Ind. Uponthe organization of the Grand Lodge, in 1818, he was electedGrand Senior Warden, and served until September, 1820. Hewas then elected Grand Master of the State, and served duringthe fourth and twelfth sessions. In 1822 he was made a RoyalArch Mason, in Louisville, Ky. In the fall of 1828 he organizedTipton Lodge No. 33, of Logansport, and in 1837 procured acharter and organized Logan Royal Arch Chapter, No.2.

SEYMOUR derived its name from the chief contractor andcivil engineer, Mr. Seymour, who had charge of and super-intended the construction of the Ohio & Mississippi Railway,from North Vernon, Ind., to St. Louis, Mo. The town was laidout April 27, 1852, by Meedy W. and Eliza P. Shields. The originalplat embraced that part of the present city lying north of ICincinnati Avenue, south of Fifth Street, east of Indianapolis Avenue and west of Broadway. Within the boundary lines it was traversed east and west by Second, Third and Fourth Streets,and north and south by Ewing and Mill Streets, the latter running south only to Fourth Street. The plat included ten blocks and100 lots, and was duly registered at Brownstown, the county seat.The ground on which Seymour now stands was pre-empted or purchased as follows: James Shields, father of M. W. Shields,founder of the town, was granted by the Government 1,200 acresof land at an early day, about 1812, and placed in charge of the"block-house," a rude fortress erected and maintained for several years, on the ground lying just north of the city and now occu-pied by the Catholic cemetery. This grant included all landlying north of Seventh Street, in the present city plat.The ground lying directly south, to what is now known asBruce Street, was pre-empted or purchased from the Governmentby Joshua Moore. Seeing the advantages that would accruefrom railroads, Mr. M. W. Shields purchased from Samuel Moore,his son, this tract of land, which was owned by the latter, aboutthe year 1850. Butler's addition, comprising the greater part ofthe Fifth Ward of the city of Seymour, was purchased direct fromthe Government at a merely nominal price by Charles Butler.The city of Seymour is located on a part of four separate sections,the corners of all meeting at the intersection of Brown and Wal-nut Streets. A parallel line, running south from the east side ofthe city cemetery on the north to Brown Street on the south,shows the northeastern part of the city located in the west half ofSection 17, Township 6, Range 6. All lots and lands west ofsaid parallel and north of Brown Street are located in Section 18,Township 6, Range 6. That part of the city lying south ofBrown Street and mainly west of Walnut and known as Butler'saddition, lies in Section 19, Township 6, Range 6. The fourthdivision is best known as Pfingst's addition, though much morethan this addition is included in or encompassed by Section 20.of Jackson Township.

The second storehouse in Seymour was built byMeedy W. Shields, and was located four or five doors south ofSecond Street, on the east side of Indianapolis Avenue.
The first public sale of lots in Seymour took place Novem-ber 11, 1852, and Mr. Shields, the founder of the town, who hadnothing to show as an inducement to investment but the projectof railroads (on paper) that were soon to come, was most hap-pily surprised at the eagerness of bidders. At that time theground where the Ohio & Mississippi and Jeffersonville,Madison & Indianapolis depots now stand, was a pondon which water stood nearly all the year, to a depth ofseveral feet. The now well-known Jonas House corner wasthen the corner of a field which yielded abundant crops of wheator corn each year. The greater part of what is now known asthe First Ward was a dense forest, which was used as a woodspasture by Mr. Shields, the western boundary of which was de-fined by a rail fence, running about on the present line of EwingStreet.
A saw-mill built by M. W. Shields in the year 1852, and su-perintended by Stephen Adams, furnished the lumber used in theerection of most of the new houses built in Seymour during theyears 1852 to 1855. This saw-mill stood just east ofthe Jeffersonville, Madison & Indianapolis Railway and halfway between Third and Fourth Streets, beside a ra-vine which is now covered by a culvert.

A rivalry had for some time existedbetween M. W. Shields, whose interests were in and near Seymour,and John J. Kester, who was a large property owner in and aboutRockford, a village of 500 inhabitants, two miles north, eachhaving contended for the coming of the then prospective Ohio &Mississippi Railroad through their respective towns. The sur-vey being completed and Mr. Shields being triumphant, it is notsurprising that the denizens of Rockford, taking their cue fromMr. Kester, had no kindly feeling for their new though promisingrival. Such influence as they could exert was brought to bear onthe officials of the road, and, as a consequence trains did notstop at Seymonr for nearly three years after the Jeffersonville &Indianapolis Railroad had been completed through the town."Mule Crossing," as Seymour was derisively called, was tabooedby her jealous rival, and many and bitter were the personal quar-rels that grew out of this jealousy.

ADDITIONS.
The first addition to Seymour was recorded by Meedy W.Shields, August 29, 1854, and embraced that portion of the citylying between the Ohio & Mississippi Railway, and Tipton andits extension, High Street, east of Chestnut Street and west ofBroadway. Shields' addition, recorded February 13, 1856, em-bracing three or four blocks lying south of High Street, and eastof the Jeffersonville, Madison & Indianapolis Railway. Shields'addition, recorded September 23, 1858; twelve blocks west of theJeffersonville, Madison & Indianapolis Railway, and both northand south of the Ohio & Mississippi Railway. Shields' addition,May 15, 1863; six blocks east of the original town plat,and north of the Ohio & Mississippi Railway. Various otherminor additions were recorded by Mr. Shields, on the followingdates: June 13, 1863; June 17, 1863; June 19, 1863; March 7,1864; June 17, 1864; November 9, 1864. Butler's addition,September 24, 1863, blocks A, B, D, E, and F. Various otheradditions have been made to the city.
SCHOOLS.
The first schoolhouse erected for the accommodation of the,children of Seymour, was built by Meedy W. Shields, at the cor-ner of Ewing and Fifth Streets, on the lot now owned by MathiasFreidman. This building was a frame, and contained threerooms, one above being used for church purposes, and two roomsbelow for schools. This town's progress being rapid, and its pop-ulation increasing apace, several other rooms were rented through-out the town for school purposes, between 1853, when this housewas built, and 1860, when the first national census of the townwas taken, which showed a population of 924. The old schoolbuilding was destroyed by fire June 9,1859, and a new, two-storybrick school building was at once erected on the lot now occupiedby John Sansterer's residence.

The Seymour Democrat was first established as the SeymourUnion by Henry M. Beedle. The paper was afterward given its present name, and previous to 1875 was owned in turn by J. H.McCormick, M. W. Shields, A. A. Davison, Shank & Stairs, andperhaps others.

In 1855, M. W. Shields, founder of the town, advertised inthe Cincinnati and Louisville papers that he would give suffi-cient grounds and $100 to any church organization that wouldlocate in Seymour. April 29, 1855, a Presbyterian society ofseven members was organized, with Rev. Charles White, pastor.In September of that year a frame church building was erectedon the corner of Second and Chestnut Streets.

But few if any counties in the State exceeded Jackson in itsfirst enthusiasm at the breaking out of the Rebellion. In oneweek more than a full company had been organized at Seymourand had left for Indianapolis. Before taking the train onMonday evening, April 22, the men were formed in line in thepresence of the immense multitude that had gathered to see themleave. Eloquent and patriotic addresses were made by Dr. Ford,M. W. Shields and S. W. Holmes, and so affecting was the scenethere was scarcely a dry eye to be seen in the vast assemblage ofmen, women and children.

In the early part of October, 1861, a meeting of all the homeguards of the county was held at Brownstown. It was a grandsuccess, and a large. crowd was present from all portions of thecounty. An address was delivered by the Hon. C. L. Dunham.This was perhaps the most successful drill ever held in the countyby the legion. Large numbers of its men had entered the activeservice, and its efficiency greatly impaired. It continued its or-ganization, however, during most of the war, and at the time ofMorgan's raid was called together under Meedy W. Shields, itscommander.

THE MORGAN RAID.
Perhaps nothing ever stirred the people of southern Indianaso deeply, or spread such universal alarm among the inhabitants,as the news that the rebel Gen. John H. Morgan had crossed thethe Ohio River with his regiment of cavalry on a raid throughIndiana. Every community in the southern portion of the Statedeemed itself the object of attack, and was excited to the highestpitch of active resistance. The farmer left the plow and the mer-chant his store, and all united, with whatever weapon could beprocured, to drive the invader back. Jackson County shared theexcitement in the fullest degree. When it became known withsome certainty of the whereabouts of Morgan, two companies ofthe legion were stationed on the road leading to Salem, under thecommand of Capt. M. W. Shields. At that time it was supposed thatthe object of the rebel commander's attack was Indianapolis, andthat his route would be by this road through Brownstown. Greatrelief was afforded when news came that from Salem the courseof the invaders was more to the east. It was later learned thatthe probable course would bring them to Vernon, in JenningsCounty. At that time a considerable force was at Seymour, un-der Gen. Love, and this was ordered to Vernon, where it at onceproceeded by the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad.

MEEDY WHITE SHIELDS, late of Seymour, was born inSevierville, Sevier Co., Tenn., July 8, 1805. He was the son ofJames and Penelope (White) Shields, and a grandson of Stock-ton Shields, of Virginia, a captain in the Revolutionary war.
The subject of this sketch attended school only three months inhis life, but by his own energy attained a thorough English edu-cation. He removed to Corydon, Harrison County, in 1811,using pack-horses in making the journey. In 1816 the familywent to Jackson County and settled on a farm that is now part ofthe city of Seymour. At this time there were only six whitefamilies in the county. From 1820 to 1832 Mr. Shields was en-gaged in running a flat-boat from the White River to NewOrleans, and in managing his farm. In the early part of 1832he enlisted in the army, was made first lieutenant, and in the fallof that year was promoted to a captaincy. At the close of theBlackhawk war, in 1833, he returned to Jackson County, wherehe married Eliza P. Ewing, the daughter of a wealthy farmer of Brownstown, of the same county. He then engaged in farmingon the old homestead. In the fall of 1846 he was elected a mem-ber of the Legislature, and was re-elected in 1848. In October,1852, he was elected State senator from the counties of Jacksonand Scott. In November of that year he laid out the town (nowthe city) of Seymour, and in 1853 opened a general store andalso constructed eleven miles of the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad.
He was a lover of fine stock, and manifested a great interest inthe improvement of the cattle of the county, making the firstimportation of fine stock in the neighborhood. It was mainlythrough his efforts that the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad passedthrough the town of Seymour, as the road had been located twomiles north, through the town of Rockford. In the fall of 1856he was again elected to the State senate from Jackson, and Jen-nings Counties, and there introduced the bill compelling railroadcompanies to bring all trains to a stop at crossings of other rail-roads.

In 1860 he was a delegate to the Democratic Conventionat Charlestown which nominated Douglas for President. He wasthe father of eight children, two of whom, Ewing and Tipton,are deceased; Bruce T. and William H. are now farming; SarahS. married John H. Blish in 1854, and Eliza S. married A. W.Dickinson in 1864. Mr. Shields was not a member of any relig-ious denomination, but gave liberally to several churches in theirinfancy, donating a lot to every church. His wife was a memberof the First Presbyterian Church, and not only was a liberal con-tributor to the church at Seymour, but gave largely of her meansto the support of Presbyterian Churches allover the State. Thecity of Seymour in its rapid growth, its numerous railroadshops, its extensive manufactories, and its high school, whichbears Mr. Shields' name, is greatly indebted to the energy, in-dustry, perseverance and influence of its founder. He died Feb-ruary 6, 1866, of inflammation of the stomach, and in his deaththe city suffered an irreparable loss. His wife departed this lifeNovember 14, of the same year. Mr. Shields left an estate worth$375,000, accumulated by his own energy, sagacity and industry.His brother, William Shields, in the year 1840 was a member ofthe Indiana Legislature, and died during his term of office. Hewas dearly beloved by the people and was followed to the graveby an immense concourse of citizens. Appropriate resolutionsin regard to his sterling worth were adopted by the house.

The sentiment that had been gaining ground against theprosecution of the war probably attained its highest in the sum-mer of 1863. This, however, was not a sentiment in favor of theRebellion, but was in favor of conciliation, and was willing to con-tinue the existence of slavery. The emancipation proclamation,therefore, to those who held these views, was a dangerous andunwarranted proceeding. To them it seemed the Government waswaging a war of subjugation and for the abolishment of slavery.Such a course they were heartily opposed to, and from thesecauses alone, were opposed to the prosecution of the war. Theywere equally opposed to the breaking up of the Union. A con-servative or middle course was what they proposed to follow; butit is doubtful if such a plan could have succeeded at that time.President Lincoln took the smaller horn of the dilemma, and wiselyconcluded that it was better to destroy slavery than the Union.The Indiana Legislature of 1863 passed a resolution declar-ing in favor of calling a National Peace Convention, and requestedthe people of Indiana to send representatives to a State Conven-tion that should appoint delegates to the National assembly. Thisgave the opportunity for the various counties to express theirsentiment upon the war questions. The one for Jackson Countywas held at Brownstown, February 19 of that year. Maj. S. P.Mooney was chosen chairman, with W. W. Wamsley and BenCarr, secretaries. The following men were appointed a commit-tee on resolutions: Martin Ferris, Martin Henderlider, SamuelLee, Michael May, L. L. Shields, W. C. A. Bain, Daniel Bar-ringer, Andrew Robertson, Enoch Hunsucker, William Hupp andAlex Heinote. The meeting was addressed by Hons. ThomasDowling, G. F. Cookerly and H. W. Harrington. The resolutionsare too long for insertion here.

LYCURGUS L. SHIELDS, of Seymour, was born in thiscounty, May 19,1834, the first son of M. W. and Eliza P.(Ewing)Shields. After attending the public school of his neighborhoodand the private school of John I. Morrison, at Salem, Ind., ayear, he was at the State University, at Bloomington, Ind., twoyears. At the age of twenty-six he married Miss R. J. McCollum,and moved (in 1852), with her parents, to Seymour, when therewere but two houses in the place. Of the ten children born tothem six are living, namely: Ewing, Fannie, Nellie, Lycurgus,Dickinson and Meedy. The deceased are Eliza P., Swope, Meedy,Sarah and Lorne. Mr. Shields is a farmer and stock raiser. Inpolitics he is a Democrat, and he is regarded as one of the influ-ential men of the county.

MISS MARY MOONEY is a native of Jackson County. Shewas born July 1, 1821, upon the present site of Rockford. Shewas the third born to James and Nancy (Shields) Mooney. Theywere natives of Kentucky and Tennessee respectively. They im-migrated to Indiana upon pack-horses, when the State was onevast wilderness. She was a first cousin of the renowned Gen. Tip-ton. Miss Mooney removed to Seymour, when there were very fewhouses in the village, and has resided here ever since. She estab-lished the first millinery store in the town, and has continued inthe business ever since. Miss Mooney has been connected withthe Methodist Episcopal Church ever since her fifteenth yearand has been a consistent member of the church and faithfulChristian, all these years.
