  1. 1.  Walter Charters

    Notes:

    On 10 MAy 1803 Walter Charles and Sarah his wife, "late widow of John Pauley"
    entered another petition for inquest and/or partition naming John Pauley's
    seven children: John, Thomas and James Pauley, Agnes, wife of Isaac Sellers;
    Sarah, wife of Archibald Ewing, Elsey and Elizabeth Pauley. At the inquest
    held at the home of Walter Charters of Greenwood Township on 8 September 1803
    before William Sterritt Esq., Sheriff of Mifflin County, the jury decided that
    the property, a messuage and two adjoining tracts containing 200 acres, could
    not be suitably divided, but should be evaluated at $2460. On 30 March 1807
    this decision was set aside and a new petition of Walter and Sarah Charters
    again named John Pauley's seven children with two new developments: John
    Pauley Jr. is dead leaving one daughter for whom Samuel Sharron is appointed
    guardian; Elizabeth Pauley is now the wife of Samuel Miller.

    In the 1790 census Walter Charters was listed as a resident in Northumberland
    County Pennsylvania; his household had one male over 16, one younger male and
    two females. According to the will of their grandfather (1795), Walter and his
    first wife Sarah Irvine had three chldren: Margaret, William and Elizabeth
    Charters. In the 1800 census of Greenwood Township, Mifflin County, Walter
    Charters and his then wife (Sarah McTeer Pauley) were listed as 16026 ( a much
    too optimistic figure!); their household had five children 10-16 years, two
    boys, three girls, with and additional girl under ten years. Thomas Pauley,
    James Pauley, and Agnes (Pauley) Sellers were listed in separate households.

    In the 1810 census of Greenwood, Walter Charters was shown as over 45 years;
    his houselold had two males, one Female aged 16-26, one girl 10-16, and one boy
    under ten years. On 14 April 1812 and again on 15 May 1812 Walter Charters
    deeded land in Greenwood Township to Joseph Barge.
