Notes:

Powell Stamper Ownbey is reported to have been adopted by Johny Ownbey.
Whether the surname Ownbey was added or whether Powell Stamper Ownbey is the
son of one of Johny's brothers is unknown. He might possibly be the son of the
following:

"Marriages of some Virginia Residences" by Wulfeck. Series 1, Vol. 5, p. 165.
Thomas Oneby m. 27 Jul 1727 to Mary Stamper at Christ Church.

Correspondesce to the above remark is a notation from Mr. George Dewey Ownbey:
"I believe the Thomas Oneby you mentioned, marrying Mary Stamper is somehow
connected with Powell Stamper Ownbey, who was killed by a fallen tree on Bald
Mountain about a mile from where I lived in 1815. His grave is close by where
he was killed. He had gone, very early in the morning to chop down a tree to
make an Ash trough for his wife. She called him to breakfast, he turned to
answer her and the tree fell. The accident took place on Johny Warren's place
- also on Bald Mountain, where Powell and his family were living at the time of
his death. Buried down the branch from where the Warren place - At Standing Cap
Stone, the spot where they stood when hunting. Bill Warren was a heavy bearded
man and seemed to know he wanted Carl Searcy to work for him and (Carl) being
kid like was usually hard to find."
