Fortner, Ralph R. of Knoxville, Tennessee died Monday, April 20th at Fort Sanders Hospital, following a brief illness. He was an active and longtime member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where he served as Trustee of the Mount Olive Cemetery for many years. He was born into the great depression, was a veteran of World War II, and was the embodiment of what Tom Brokaw called “ The Greatest Generation.” He had a servant’s heart, and a strong and independent, yet humble spirit. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1951 with a B.S. in Business Administration, where he was a charter member of the Alpha Lambda chapter of Beta Alpha Psi fraternity. He was owner and president of Tennessee Coal Sales Company, and Blount – Knox Equipment Company. Ralph loved to work, and was probably more active in retirement than most men are in a lifetime. He was an accountant, business executive, small business owner, pilot, and farmer. He and his wife Hazel traveled extensively in retirement, and he loved exploring new places. He especially enjoyed meeting people, and no one was a stranger to him for very long. He was a devoted father, and if you spent any time at all with Ralph you were going to get to hear about his grandkids. He absolutely adored his wife Hazel with whom he shared and enjoyed life for 59 years. He missed her every day after her passing. Ralph was greatly loved, and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel E. Fortner, his parents, L. E. and Eva Shanks Fortner, his brothers Leon Fortner, Conley Fortner, Ted Fortner, and G. W. Fortner.
Survivors
He is survived by his daughters Donna F. Tipton and husband David W. Tipton, Karen F. Hickman and husband J. Todd Hickman, grandsons Taylor, Spenser and Hunter Tipton, granddaughters Chloe and Emma Hickman, and his sister Luna Mae Shepherd.
