U.S. Veteran William Avery Strickland, Jr., age 59 passed away Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Newport Medical Center. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in the Iraq War where he received the Purple Heart and other combat awards. He was preceded in death by his parents William A. and Geraldine Strickland. He is survived by his children James Strickland of Conroe, Texas, Lisa Strickland Shelton of Illinois, Jacquelyn Price of Newport, Travis Strickland of Newport and Catrina (Pooh Bear) Strickland of Newport; brothers Guy Daniels of Cosby, and Jimmy Daniels of Newport; sister Joann Fain of Morristown; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, May 31, 2013 at Manes Funeral Home with Rev. Sherman Ball and Mitch Reagan officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm Friday prior to funeral services. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to Horses for Heroes New Mexico Cowboy Up! at: horsesforheroes.org.
