ormer Newport resident Edgar Ray Shelton, age 79, died April 17, 2008 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee during major heart surgery.
A service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aril 20, 2008 at Costner-Maloy Funeral Home with visitation preceding the service from 2-4 p.m. Burial will be at Faubion (Baltimore) Cemetery immediately following the service.
Mr. Shelton was born June 18, 1929 in Parrottsville, Tennessee to Frank and Anna Mae Shelton as the eldest of five children. His surviving sisters are Barbara Ottinger and Frankie Bower of Greeneville, Betty Winter of Parrottsville and Janice Williams of Newport.
He graduated from Parrottsville High School in 1944. He married Marry Magdalene Shelton on August 4, 1950, at Long Creek Christian Church in Parrottsville, (Mary was a nurse at Valentine Shults Hospital and trained personally by Dr. Valentine, Jr.) His daughter, Phyllis was delivered by Dr. Shults in 1953.
He began a 34 year career in 1958 with Hiwassee Land Company, a subsidiary of Bowater Paper Company, in Sevierville, TN. After two stints in Johnson City separated by five years in north Georgia during which his son, Edgar Ray Shelton, Jr. ("Ed") was born in 1962, he moved to Crossville, Tennessee in 1970. Before he retired in 1992, he managed the construction of the Virgin Falls Pocket Wilderness, the first of seven nature areas opened by Bowaters. Mary died in 1984 after a two year struggle with breast cancer. Edgar was remarried in 1988 to Shirley Ann Dayton Hughes, owner of Hughes Department Store and Merle Norman franchise, in Crossville. After retiring in 1992 from Hiwasee Land Company for six weeks he began helping Shirley's son, Chris Hughes, with his bean farming business. He last worked in August, 2007.
His family wrote: Edgar 's work ethic and kind heart were a role model and inspiration to everyone who knew him. He hung onto life tenaciously and never stopped giving. His son-in-law Bill said Edgar was the only person he ever knew who was liked by every single person in his life. He loved George Jones, trees, and tractors.
In addition to his sisters, he is survived by his wife, Shirley Hughes Shelton, his daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis Shelton and Bill Pomakoy of Hendersonville, TN and grandchildren, Chris Raborn, Shannon Roland, Erika Liguori and Nathan Pomakoy; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Shirlene and David Oaks of Crossville and grandchildren, Stacey and Stephen; stepson and daughter-in-law, Chris and Patty Hughes of Crossville and grandchildren, Shaunda and Tiffany; and nieces and nephews, Pat Bonnett and Bill Cody, Mike Stone, Frank Shelton, Patricia Barger, Arlene Shelton -Holt, and Johnny Shelton. He had eight great-grandchildren and twenty-seven grandnieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Jeannette and Elizabeth Shelton both of Newport.
Mr. Shelton was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Mary Magdalene and his son Ed.
