GRASSY FORK-Chipper McGaha, whose nickname was "Chip," was remembered fondly by colleagues, friends, and family members at Grassy Fork Elementary School on Thursday, Nov. 17.
McGaha died June 12 at the age of 61.
McGaha was remembered at a special memorial service as someone who cared more about others than himself.
The evening was named "Chip McGaha Night" in a proclamation signed by Cocke County Mayor Vaughn Moore, Newport Mayor Connie Ball, and Parrottsville Mayor Mary Keller.
McGaha was a basketball coach for boys and girls teams at Grassy Fork Elementary School, and for several years, often raised money to take ball teams to the beach, friends recalled.
Dr. Shannon Grooms, a former principal of Grassy Fork Elementary School, said McGaha was a competitor in both athletics and academics.
