James Newton Overholt, age 87, of Newport, died Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at the Baptist Convalescent Center.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Newport. He and his brothers moved from Jefferson County to Newport in 1938 and started Overholt’s Hardware. They originally set up their store with a Western Auto franchise in a small building next to the A&P Store, moved in 1941 into the old Driskill-Lynch building, and finally in 1958 they moved to the store’s present location on Broadway across from Stokely Library. In 1975 he started the Auto Shop on the Cosby Highway and remained there until his retirement in the late 70s. He was also widely known as a locksmith who came to the rescue of many stranded motorists throughout Cocke County. He was a charter member of Smoky Mountain Country Club.
James was the son of the late Ira and Delia Berry Overholt and was preceded in death by his brothers, Clay, Connie, and Wayne; wife, Jean Cole Overholt; and son, David Jay Overholt.
Survived by son and daughter-in-law, James Cole and Jill Overholt; grandson, Brian Overholt; granddaughter, Laura Overholt, both of Newport; nephews and nieces, Robert and Patricia Overholt, Joe and Charlotte Overholt, all of Newport, Anne and Larry Smith, of Hopkinsville, KY; and several great-nieces and nephews.
The service to celebrate the life of James Overholt will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel at First Baptist Church in downtown Newport.
Family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Manes Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the BCC Alzheimer’s Team, 450 College St., Newport, or to the Baptist Convalescent Center, same address.
