Sara Sue Cole Hartsell, 82, of Newport, passed away Friday morning at her College Street home.
Mrs. Hartsell, the widow of Herbert G. (Jet) Hartsell, was a native of the Del Rio community. The older of two daughters born to the late Harle J. and Ethel (Franks) Cole, she began her schooling at the old Del Rio School. She also attended Dorland-Bell Presbyterian Academy and Central High School.
Following her marriage to Mr. Hartsell on July 18, 1936, she moved to Newport For several years she and her husband operated the Stork Shop. From 1970-1978 she served as Society Editor of the Cocke County Banner. During this time she became well known throughout the county and developed a love of photography which later led to a partnership in Trianon Studios. She enjoyed opening her home to many brides-to-be as a setting for their engagement picture and often served as their wedding director.
A longtime member of First United Methodist Church, she belonged to the Ladies Bible Class and the Frankie Russell Circle. For several years she chaired the church's Parsonage Committee.
She was a member of the Twentieth Century Club and the Heartsease Garden Club. For several years she enjoyed league bowling and was also an avid bridge player. She enjoyed her home and gardening.
In 1952 she was one of the first women seated on a Cocke County jury. The other three, Mrs. Tip Brown, Mrs. Roy T. Campbell, Sr., and Mrs. Dave Holt, are also deceased.
The Hartsells were the parents of one daughter, Susan (Hartsell) Roberts, who preceded her parents in death. Mrs. Hartsell was also preceded in death by her husband, her sister, Jean (Cole) Overholt, and a nephew, David J. Overholt.
Survivors include her granddaughters, Suanne (Roberts) Cody and husband, Brad, Melbourne, FL, and Sally (Roberts) Weber and husband, Rick, Lenoir City, TN; great-granddaughters, Allison and Rachel Cody, Melbourne, FL; great-grandsons, Scott and Cole Weber, Lenoir City; brother-in-law, James N. Overholt; nephews, Jim Cole Overholt, Carroll Hall and Ivan Hall; and niece, Shirley Hall, all of Newport; one uncle and two aunts, James S. and Agnes Franks and Catherine F. Ottinger, all of Newport; several cousins and many friends.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, December 17, 2001, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Irwin and Rev. Riley Huffstetler officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 16, 2001, at First United Methodist Church from 2 to 5 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church or your favorite charity.
