Anita Gates Barrett, 60, of Johnson City , formerly of Newport passed away on Sunday , October 28, 2012 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. A native of the Hartford Community she was the daughter of the late Jim Ike and Eva Lee Cogdill Gates (Hartford/Denton Communities). She graduated from Cocke County High in 1970. She then went on to E.T.S.U. receiving her Bachelor's of Science in Pyhsical Education, a Master's in Science, and was just four hours away from receiving her Doctorate's degree in education. Anita was a 7th grade science teacher at Boone's Creek Middle School for 23 years. She took her class to space camp each year. She loved her students as they were her own. She was a member at Boone Trail Baptist Church. Anita was a private pilot and loved to fly her Cessna plane. She loved life and wanted to help everyone. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Cal & Cynthia Cogdill (Green Corner) and father in law, and mother in law Dr. T.R. & Margie Barrett (Tazwell, Va.). She leaves behind a daughter and son in law Stacey and Jason Bradley; two precious grandsons that were the light of her life, Izack Bradley and Gabriel Bradley, father of her daughter Pat Barrett all of Johnson City; sisters and brothers in law Maxine & the late Johnny Taylor, Wilma & Billy Webb, all of Newport and Shirlene & Lloyd Myers, Sevierville; nephews Brian Webb and Brad Webb and nieces Kim Taylor Ball all of Newport,and Morgan Myers of Sevierville. A Celebration of Life service for Anita Gates Barrett will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday November 1, 2012 at Boone Trail Baptist Church, 1985 Carroll Creek Road, Johnson City, TN 37615 (423) 282-1341, with Wayne Bledsoe officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday at the church from 5:00 p.m. until the service hour. A Graveside and Committal service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday November 2, 2012 in Union Cemetery, Newport, under the direction of Manes Funeral Home. Everyone is asked to meet the family at the cemetery on Friday at 1:45 p.m. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Family and friends may also sign the register at Manes Funeral Home, 363 East Main Street, Newport, TN (www.manesfuneralhome.com) on Friday November 2, 2012 from 9:00 am until the graveside service.
