John Calhoun Porter, 98, of Newport, died at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County on Thursday morning, January 7. He graduated from Smokey Mtn. Academy in Sevierville and Central High School in Newport. He was also a graduate of Cumberland Law School in Lebanon and a graduate of Carson-Newman College, where he played football. He was an avid sportsman. He passed the bar in 1930 and was an active trial lawyer for 62 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newport; was a business entrepreneur; and was a member and former president of the Cocke County Bar Association. He is survived by his wife, Bessie Crouch Porter of Newport; son, John Crouch Porter of Jacksonville, Florida; son and daughter-in-law, Judge J. Kenneth and Janet Rhodes Porter of Newport; sister, Gene Hembree of Sevierville; grandchildren, Janie Porter of Nashville, James K. Jr. and Kathy Porter of Sevierville, John Calhoun II and Allison Porter of Jacksonville, Florida, David Wall and Misty Porter of Dallas, Texas, and Sarah Porter and Sam Warnack of Savannah, Georgia; and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Manes Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jim Lindsay and Rev. Ralph Smith officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Manes Funeral Home, prior to the funeral.
