Edward Ward Hughes, passed away peacefully at his home in Newport on Wednesday, July 23, 2003. He was born November 10, 1912 in the St. Tide Community of Cocke County to Charles Franklin and Idella Mae Harmon Hughes, the second of their three children.
He attended Unity School and graduated valedictorian of the Class of 1932 from Cocke County High School, the first person to graduate with eighteen credits. He attended East Tennessee State College, Carson-Newman College, and University of Tennessee. For twelve years he taught in Cocke County Schools including Unity, Edgemont, West End (both in the Knitting Mill and the new school), Green Meadow, Rankin, and Cave Hill. He also served as attendance teacher for five years while Lagretta Parrott was Superintendent of Cocke County Schools.
He was appointed Cocke County General Sessions Judge by the Tennessee Legislature in 1953 for a term. After this, he worked as cost accountant for Stokely-Van Camp for 18 years, retiring in 1976. He was active in local politics and served as a member of the Cocke County Court for two terms. He enjoyed gardening, farming, and raising cattle. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ben Hooper Hughes; sister, Mildred Hughes Keifer; half-brother, Corbin Lee Robinson; and half sister, Bonnie Joe Robinson Match.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Geraldine Pitts Hughes; daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Lynn Murray; son and daughter-in-law, Charles Douglas and Vicki Hughes, Mosheim; son, Grady Edward Hughes, Louisville; son and daughter-in-law, Gordon Dale and Vicki Hughes, Morristown; grandchildren, Leanne Murray, Johnson City and Isabella and Anabella Hughes, Mosheim; and step-grandchildren, Jennifer and Kevin Smelcer, Morristown; nieces and nephews including special niece, Kathy Ogle, and special nephew, Hal Keifer and wife, Lorene.
The family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday evening, July 25, 2003, at Manes Chapel; the funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. with Dr. Charlie Boggan officiating. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2003, in Union Cemetery.
