Fortunately I rarely have to visit the emergency room. The last life-threatening injury was when a screw head ripped my forearm and Dr. Mike Hood stitched me up. Then on Monday about 5 p.m. my Phillips head screwbit attached to my hefty power drill slipped and rammed into my left index finger. Fortunately it wasn't the typing end. Since I had not made any appointments ahead of time for care, I went to the Baptist Hospital ER, expecting a long wait-and for whatever reason early in the week many people needed care. I just needed a tetanus shot. I did discover that Madonna works at the Newport ER. In case you wondered where she has been. Nurse Madonna quickly ascertained I wasn't bleeding to death or close to going into shock and sent me to Carolyn, who updated my files. Within minutes I was in a "room" when the doctor walked in and confirmed my puncture wound only required a shot. A young nurse walked up and told me to stand by the stainless steel sink while she poured a cleansing solution on the wound. "You don't recognize me. Do you?" And I hadn't until glancing at her name badge: "Deede." It was Patti Ketterman's oldest daughter. She is married to Jason Cogdill and has been working at the local hospital a few years. Deede did a fine job and I was relieved someone I knew gave me the tetanus shot. The next day, revisting the hospital, I bumped into Patti, who noted that both she and Deede were getting more education. As for me, my finger learned a lot from the experience.
