NEWPORT-Funeral services for Dwight L. Bundy, former chairman of the Cocke County Board of Education, are scheduled for Friday night in the chapel of Manes Funeral Home. Bundy, 84, died yesterday at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee after a short bout with cancer. Bundy was born in South Carolina on May 28, 1922, a son of James Bundy and his wife, the former Zora Jane Wood. Although born in South Carolina, Bundy was reared in his mother's native Cocke County and graduated from Cosby High School. In the 1940s, Bundy returned to South Carolina where he met the former Ella Mae Norwood, a Del Rio native. After a courtship of 19 months, the two were married in Laurens, SC, on 27 April 1946. The couple celebrated their 60th anniversary this past year with a gala party. After his marriage, Bundy went to work for Pet Milk Company in South Carolina. After a few years, including some time spent in Cleveland, Ohio, the Bundys returned to Cocke County. Here Bundy found employment at Dixie Dairy, a distributor for Pet Milk and owned by the late Bob Kilpatrick. Bundy initially delivered milk to private homes. Eventually he purchased the business from Kilpatrick and increased the number of routes served by the firm. Shortly before selling the dairy in 1982, Bundy opened his first laundromat, which was located in Eastport Shopping Center. Later he purchased a similar business, West Gate Coin Laundry. He also owned several local restaurants. A person who loved his community and who remained keenly interested in its development, Bundy became active in several local organizations. A charter member of Carson Springs Ruritan Club, he served as their president. He was also a charter member of the Wilsonville Fire Department. He was a Third Degree Master Mason and served for many years on the Cocke County Board of Equalization. During the 1960s, after becoming interested in the need for educational improvement, especially in his own district, Bundy ran for and was elected to the Cocke County Board of Education in 1966. At one time, the group named him chairman. During his tenure, Bundy was instrumental in the building of a new Edgemont Elementary School. A longtime member of Wilsonville Baptist Church, Bundy was ordained deacon in 1988 and was still serving in this capacity at the time of his death. Bundy's love of camping and traveling led him and his family on trips to nearly all of the continental United States. He was also an avid reader, whose favorite books were Westerns, especially those penned by Zane Grey. Bundy is survived by his wife, three children, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Burial will be Saturday morning in Union Cemetery, Newport.
