Martin Sandress Lunsford, age 81, of Cosby passed away Friday, September2, 2011 at the Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport, following a lengthy illness. Martin enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1947, serving in the post WWII occupation of Germany and Japan. He was later a paratrooper during the Korean conflict. In 1956 he transferred to the U.S. Air Force, where he was a tail-gunner on a B-52 bomber during the Cold War era. After retiring in 1967, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for an additional 18 years. He was a faithful Christian, believing in the triune God. He was preceded in death by his parents Ted and Wave McAllister Lunsford; brothers John and Pat Lunsford; sisters Sue and Inez Lunsford; son Lorin Lunsford and daughter Laura Lunsford Bryant. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Naomi Matthews Lunsford of the home; son Dr. Martin( Diane) Lunsford, Jr. of Gatlinburg; grandsons Matthew Lunsford of Knoxville, Luke (Jennifer) Lunsford of Cosby and Austin Bryant of Gatlinburg; great-grandson Nicholas Ball of Cosby; sister Joyce Osterman of Knoxville and many other friends and relatives. The family wishes to thank Dr. Thomas Conway, Kim Thomas and the staff at Baptist Convalescent Center for their care and kindness. Per Martin’s request he was cremated and no services are planned.
