Jesse Gorman Phillips, of Newport, was born January 7, 1918, in Sardis, and passed away December 24, 1998, at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee in Knoxville.
He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church as long as his health permitted.
He served in the CCC’s prior to World War II and four years in the Signal Corps attached to the Army Air Force during World War II.
He retired from Western Electric Company with 40 years’ service, at which time Newport became his home.
He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and The American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. W.W. and Mary McMurray Phillips.
Survivors are his beloved wife of 56 years, Georgia Mae Lewis Phillips; son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd W. and Cynthia Phillips, all of Newport; brother, James Paris Phillips of Big Sandy; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Manes Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Riley Huffstetler officiating, with burial in the Union Cemetery.
The family received friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday prior to the funeral services.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Chapel Fund.
Manes Funeral Home was in charge.
