Esther Holt Hooper, of Newport, passed away Thursday, January 20, at Mariner Nursing Home in Newport. She was born on October 23, 1914, in Wachula, Florida. Esther was the daughter of the late Bruce Alexander and Mamie Gladys Henry Holt. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Mary Lois Holt; and brother, Leon A. Holt. Esther was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newport, where she served as a Sunday school teacher for small children. She was a member of the Newport Garden Club and Bridge Club. She is survived by her husband, Lemuel W. “Tige” Hooper of Newport; her daughter, Dorothy Jo Hooper Ellison and husband, Richard Ray Ellison of Cherryville, North Carolina; her son, Judge Ben W. Hooper II and wife, Patsy Mason Hooper of Newport; her sister, Launa Holt Pace of Newport; her brother, Russell L. Holt and wife, Anna Bell Holt of Maryville; her brother, Elmer E. Holt and his wife, Myrtle Holt of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and sister-in-law, Gona Dorsey Holt of Newport. Esther is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren are David B. Marks and wife, Lisa, of Durham, North Carolina; Kenneth H. Marks and wife, Kathleen, of Raleigh, North Carolina; Elizabeth M. Gordon and husband, Jim, of Littleton, Colorado; Cathy E. Boccardo, of Webster, New York; Kay E. Spinks, Laura E. Caskey, and Renee E. Hamrick of Cherryville, North Carolina; Ben W. Hooper III and wife, Lucy Hooper, Newport; Lauren H. Sartain, of Dandridge; Julie H. Kyker and husband, Michael Kyker, of Newport; and Esther “Macy” Hooper, of Newport. The family will receive family and friends at Manes Funeral Home in Newport from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 21. A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 22, at 10 a.m., at Union Cemetery. In lieu of þowers, the family requests donations be given to either the First Baptist Church, Newport, Tennessee, or the Alzheimer’s Association-Eastern Tennessee Chapter, 600 Henley Street, Suite 50, Knoxville, TN 37902.
