Son of the late Governor and Mrs. Ben Walter Hooper, of Newport, Tennessee.
Predeceased by his beloved wife, Esther Holt Hooper; his brothers, Ben Jones Hooper and James Randolph Hooper; and his sister, Anna B. Hooper Phillips.
Survived by two children, Judge Ben W. Hooper II and wife, Patsy M. Hooper, of Newport, and Dorothy Jo Hooper Ellison and husband, Richard Ellison, of Cherryville, North Carolina; sisters, Newell Hooper Hurd and Janella Hooper Carpenter; grandchildren: Ben W. Hooper III and wife, Lucy; Julia H. Kyker and husband, Mike; Laura Hooper Bible and husband, Steve; Esther “Macy” Hooper and special friend, Scott Layman; David B. Marks and wife, Lisa; Kenneth E. Marks and wife, Kathleen; Elizabeth M. Gordon and husband, Jim; Cathy E. Boccardo; Kay E. Spinks; Laura E. Cashey; and Renee E. Hamrick; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Attended University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Member, First Baptist Church.
Retired in 1973 as Supervisor of Canning at Stokely Van Camp, Newport, and remained active in wildflower gardening and logging.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Newport, 261 E. Broadway, Newport, TN 37821.
Funeral services will be held 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2003, at Manes Funeral Home West Chapel, with Dr. Rich Lloyd officiating, with burial 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 14, 2003, in Union Cemetery.
Family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Manes Funeral Home prior to the funeral service.
