Vava Lee Hawk, age 96, of Greeneville, passed away Friday, February 22, 2008. Mrs. Hawk was graduated from St. James High School in 1930, then, attended Tusculum College. She taught school in the two room schools at Oak Hill-Denton and Long Creek in the 40’s and 50’s. She enjoyed quilting, crafts and flower gardening. She worked on the farm with her husband and son for many years, raising cattle, hay and tobacco. She also helped milked the cows by hand. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill G. Hawk; parents, Emma and Lawrence Powell Ottinger; and brother, Elbert Ottinger. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Eileen Hawk of the Salem Community; granddaughters and their husbands, Julie and Randy Winter, of Parrottsville, Rhonda and Jeffrey Winter, of Knoxville, Anita and Kenneth Fast, of Birchwood; great grandchildren, Gavin and Alison Winter of Parrottsville; Paige and Heather Winter of Knoxville, Stephanie and Stephen Fast of Birchwood; sister-in-law, Eula Mae Hawk of Kingsport; several nieces, nephews; and all her special friends, the Ladies of W.E.L.C.A. at Salem-Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be held 7:00 pm Monday, February 25, 2008 in Manes Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Sterling Nelson officiating. Burial will be 11:00 am, Tuesday, February 26, 2008 in Salem-Lutheran Church Cemetery.
