Funeral services for well-known retired Parrottsville teacher, Ann Sane, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Manes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Davis officiating. Mrs. Sane, 74, died Friday evening [September 13, 2002] at her home on Good Hope Road after a period of declining health.
Born Anna Katherine Neas on June 19, 1928, in Parrottsville, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Mattie Lee (Sisk) Neas. The family home was on Harned Chapel Road where Mr. Neas was a farmer. Mrs. Neas, too, was a well-known educator in Parrottsville.
Mrs. Sane once remarked that nearly her entire life had revolved around Parrottsville School. Both her elementary and high school years were spent at Parrottsville. Following her graduation from Parrottsville High School in the 1940s, she entered East Tennessee State College (now ETSU) where she began her preparation to enter the teaching field herself.
Leaving college before finishing her degree, she began her own career at Parrottsville in 1950 and taught for 30 years, retiring in May, 1980, shortly before the birth of her first grandchild that June. She continued her college work through the years and eventually earned her bachelor's degree.
As a child she was reared in the Lutheran Faith, following her family's affiliation with Salem Lutheran Church. After her marriage she transferred her membership to Parrottsville United Methodist Church where she remained active for over 50 years. At the time of her death, she was church treasurer, a job she assumed many years ago.
Professionally she was a former member of the Cocke County Education Association, Tennessee Education Association, and National Education Association. More recently she had been active in both the Cocke County Retired Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma.
For many she was known as the "Dessert Lady" of the annual Parrottsville Fire Department's Supper. Until recently she coordinated the donation of the many cakes and pies needed for this event. At the last supper, although her health was frail, she was on hand to offer any assistance she could.
To her family and friends she embodied the role of caregiver, having stepped into the role of mother for her younger brother upon their mother's death at the age of 37. As the years passed, this love extended to her children, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, and neighbors.
On December 22, 1951, she married L.J. Sane, who preceded her in death in April, 2000.
Mrs. Sane is survived by her two children and their spouses: Larry and Regina Sane and Donald and Lisa (Sane) Giles, all of Parrottsville; four grandchildren, Justin and Jonathan Sane and Jennifer and Dylan Giles, all of Parrottsville; one brother, Lacye Phillip Neas and his wife, Charlotte, Maryville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Herbert and Reba Faye Sane, Parrottsville.
Additional survivors include one nephew, Rob Nease; three nieces, Phyllis Nease Niethammer, Sheila Nease McNeil, and Amy Sane Williams; two aunts, Irene Lampson and Blanche Hogan; one uncle, Frank Neas; and one great-aunt, Wilda Mann.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to either Parrottsville United Methodist Church or Parrottsville Volunteer Fire Department.
The body remains at Manes Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.
Manes Funeral Home is in charge.
