BROWN, CORA - 90, of Newport, passed away Wednesday morning at the Baptist Convalescent Center following a lengthy illness. She had been a member of the First Baptist Church for over 50 years. A member of the DAR. The Newport Garden Club, Newport Business Women's Club and 20th Century Club. Cora taught in several Cocke County schools before marrying the late Tip Brown in 1932. She moved into the funeral home at that time and was actively involved in the business until illness forced her retirement in 1993. Cora was a people person and truly loved the people of Cocke County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tip Brown and her brother M.G. (Sassafras Roberts. Survivors include her daughter, Sylvia Costa of Bean Station and her son, Tip Brown and his wife, Janie of Newport; grandchildren, Mark Ray and his wife, Tracey of Jefferson City, Dr. Rob Ray and his wife, Lisa of Bean Station, Amy Taylor of Russellville, Randy Brown and his wife, Katherine of Nashville, Tammy Harness and her husband, Scott of Kodak; great grandchildren, Gordon and Catey Laura Ray of Bean Station, Corrie and Kayley Ray of Jefferson City, Clay Taylor of Russellville, Bryce and Chase Harness of Kodak; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will beThursday at 8 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Alvin Watts and John Bugg officiating. Interment will be Friday morning at 10 a.m. at Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6-8 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu offlowers, the family would like donations made to the Newport Kiwanis Club's Bernice Brown Burnett Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 306, Newport, Tenn. 37821 or Alzheimer's Research.

Cora Roberts Brown - Long time owner of Brown's Funeral Home dies
A life-long resident of Cocke County died Wednesday morning.
Cora Roberts Brown, 90, died at the Baptist Convalescent Center following a lengthy illness.
She and her husband, the late Tipton Brown, owned and operated Brown Funeral Home for decades.
Cora Brown was a member of First Baptist Church for more than 50 years.
She was a former member of the William Cocke Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution; the Newport Garden Club; Newport Business Women's Club; and 20th Century Club.
Brown taught in several Cocke County schools before her marriage in 1932.
She moved into the funeral home and was involved in the business until illness forced her retirement in 1993.
Survivors include her children, Sylvia Costa, Bean Station; and Tip Brown and his wife, Janie, Newport .
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. on Thursday at Brown Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Alvin Watts and John Bugg officiating. Interment will be Friday at 10 a.m. in Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to the Newport Kiwanis Club Bernice Brown Burnett Scholarship Fund, or to Alzheimer's Research.
