William Fred Mims dies at 50
Funeral services for William Fred Mims, 50, Dandridge, will be held Friday, Feb. 6, at First United Methodist Church.
Mims, son of Newport Board of Education Chair Charlotte Jones Mims and the late William "Bud" Mims, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, in Knoxville of complications following emergency surgery.
Known to his family and friends as "Freddy," he was born May 7, 1957, and was educated at Newport Grammar and Cocke County High Schools. Following in his father's footsteps, he excelled in athletics, playing varsity football for CCHS, where he graduated in 1975.
Throughout his life, he maintained his keen interest in sports and continued to enjoy tennis and biking. He was also an avid Tennessee Titans fan.
After finishing his bachelor's degree in education, he later earned his Masters of Business Administration from Tusculum College. At the time of his death, he was employed as an instructor at ITT in Knoxville. Last year he was named ITT's Teacher of the Year.
He was the grandson of the late Newport Mayor Fred and Elizabeth (Stokely) Jones, and the late Ernest Mims and Anna Roe (Driskill) Mims, all of Newport.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Newport where the family will receive friends on Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. Church pastor the Rev. Rick Spell will officiate at the 3 p.m. funeral service. Interment will follow in Newport's Union Cemetery.
In addition to his mother, Mims is survived by his wife, Theresa Buckner Mims, Dandridge, and daughter, Heather Mims, Knoxville. Two sisters, Lisa Mims Cope, Dandridge, and Shari Mims Perryman, and husband David, also survive.

William Fred Mims, age, 51, of Dandridge, passed away Tuesday, February 3, 2009 after complications with surgery. Fred was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Newport. He had a Masters of Business Administration from Tusculum and a Bachelors in Education. He worked in Knoxville at ITT, and last year was selected as Teacher of the Year. He enjoyed tennis and biking. He is survived by his wife, Theresa Buckner Mims of Dandridge; daughter, Heather Mims, of Knoxville; mother, Charlotte J. Mims, Newport; sister, Lisa Mims Cope of Dandridge; sister and brother-in-law, Shari Mims Perryman and husband David , of Newport; nieces, Lia Perryman and Alayna Perryman, of Newport; nephew, Bud Perryman, of Newport;father in law Kyle Buckner of Bybee; brother-in-law, Ricky Buckner and his wife, Louise of Bybee. Funeral services will be held 3:00 pm Friday, February 6, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Rick Spell officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-3 pm at the church prior to the funeral services.
