  John Butler was born outside London. He came to the United States when he was a child of two years . . . he lived in New York, for a time, but came to Joliet in 1864, where he had resided ever since. John was a shoemaker by trade. He died in the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. A. Mateer, 609 Exchange Street. John Butler's Mason record lists him as being born in Brooklyn, New York. He became affiliated with Matteson Lodge in Joliet, Illinois on 3 December 1867 after taking his degrees in Niagara Lodge No. 375, Lockport, New York. Listed in 1850 and 1860 Lockport, Niagrara County, New York federal census page 65 and 975 respectfully. Listed in Joliet, Will County, Illinois directory as residing at 408 W. Oneida as High School janitor 1884 and 1885. He is not listed in 1886, but at 510 Oneida as High School janitor 1887-1890 and no occupation 1891 and 1892. There is also a Atkinson Harris listed at 510 Oneida 1887-1888, James P. Work 1889-1890, Clifton W. Jordan 1891-1892. I suspect they lived in a "duplex" style house and the 408 address was changed to 510 in 1886 or 1887.
