Hazel Reese Thornton, age 93, of Newport passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at her home. She was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Newport and one of the founding members of Smokey Mountain Art & Craft Guild. She taught many students with her artistic talents and passion for art. She loved painting landscapes of the Smokey Mountain area, still-life, and beautiful flowers of East Tennessee. She and her husband started Thornton Drug Store, presently Jabo’s Pharmacy. She was also a school teacher and head start teacher at Edgemont School. She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond F. Thornton, sister Gaveta Gray, parents Arthur Reese and Alta Reese Wilson.
Survivors include her daughter Janice Martin (Bill) of Michigan, son Reese Thornton, grandchildren Leah and Calvin Thornton, Brian Martin (Lisa) all of Newport, Rusty Martin, Raymond Martin (Teresa), Melissa Samluk (Mike) all of Michigan, great-grandchildren Philip and Paige Martin, Kyle, Nathan, and Kaylie Samluk all of Michigan, special friends Louise Samples, Sharon Barrett, and Martha Ward, along with several special cousins, neices, and nephews.
Funeral Services will be 12:00p.m. Saturday, October 17, 2009 at First United Methodist Church of Newport with Rev. Rick Spell officiating. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m.-12:00p.m. prior to the service at the church. For the benefit of anyone who cannot attend Saturday’s services the family asks that you feel free to come by the home at 279 Cherokee Dr. at any time on Friday. A fellowship gathering and Celebration of Hazel’s life, with refreshments, will follow after the interment in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church of Newport, everyone is welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church of Newport, Elevator Fund.
