Hughy Smith, 97, of Newport, went to be with his Lord Monday morning, September 2, 2002. Hughy was a Baptist by faith and a U.S. Army veteran, and was a contractor.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida B. (Inman) Smith; parents, John Lewis and Rebecca (Clark) Smith; two sons, Darrell Smith and J.F. Smith preceded; also 4 brothers and 2 sisters preceded him in death, Dr. R.W. Smith, Wilbur Smith, Jack Smith, Voll Smith, Hazel S. Stokeley, and Maude S. Ford.
He is survived by nieces and nephews, Esther Kuhl, of Birmingham, AL; John L. Smith, of Newport; Rebecca S. Scott, of Akron, OH; Varnall Smith, of California; Don Ford, of Georgia; Lita S. Poteat, of Morgan, NC; Roger Smith, of Lawrenceburg, TN; Lillian S. Bolton, of Knoxville; several great-nieces and nephews; special friend, Ton Webb and Betty and W.D. Tucker, of Newport; one granddaughter and two great-grandsons.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, September 3, 2002 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at Brown Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Manson Lee will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by D.A.V. Post 102. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery.
Brown Funeral Home has been honored to make the final arrangements for Mr. Hughy Smith.
