Cocke County Property Assessor Margaret Allen Sorrell defeated Billy 'JoBob' Hudson and Gerald Ottinger. Sorrell received 4,154 votes, which is 46.48 percent, while Ottinger came in second with 2,505 votes and Hudson placed third with 2,274 votes. Ottinger received 28.03 percent, while Hudson carried 25.44 percent of the vote. Sorrell said she is tickled to death that she won the election. "I would like to thank all my friends, family, and supporters that worked for me," said Sorrell. "I want to give a big thanks to the voters of Cocke County for supporting my efforts as their property assessor."

Margaret Allen Sorrell is announcing her candidacy for Cocke County Property Assessor.
Margaret Allen Sorrell, 580 Wells Drive, is announcing her candidacy for Cocke County Property Assessor. Sorrell has been assessor since Jan. 1, 2005. Sorrell is the daughter of the late Wilbur and Nelle Allen, and the granddaughter of the late Charlie and Rachel Allen, of Cosby, and the late Dave and Carrie Owens, of Del Rio. "A very special person to me and my children is grandpa James Herman Sorrell," she said. Sorrell has two sons, one daughter, and three grandchildren. Brian Sorrell, 36, a CCHS graduate and United States Air Force master sergeant, is married to Lisa Pruitt. The couple has two children: Cory, 15, and Tia, 12. Craig Sorrell, 31, a CCHS and ETSU graduate, is employed at Mountain Loft and Five Rivers Adventures. Jennifer Sorrell Holt, 28, a CCHS graduate, is married to Kevin Holt, and the couple has one son, Hunter, age 2. Sorrell also has two brothers - Owen and Gary Allen - as well as three sisters - Willian Allen Stokely, Lynn Allen Russell, and Carol Allen Sawyer. Another brother, Charles "Bud" Allen, is deceased. "I attended Del Rio Elementary School and graduated from CCHS," she said. "I have certificates of completion in the following courses sponsored by the University of Tennessee: Division of Property Assessments Basic Mapping, Division of Property Assessments Advanced Mapping, and Division of Property Assessments Laws and Essentials. "I have also completed the courses and have been certified by the International Association of Assessing Officer (IAAO) in Course 1-Fundamentals of Real Property Appraisal, and Course 2 - Income Approach to Valuation. I have designation/certification of Assessment Level I and Assessment Level II. I am a member of the Tennessee Association of Assessing Officers (TAAO)," said Sorrell. "I have worked hard to achieve these levels of education," she added. "I love Cocke County and consider it a privilege to work for the people. I will appreciate your vote and support in the Feb. 5 Republican Primary," said Sorrell. Sorrell has been working in the Cocke County Property Assessor's office for 28 years, and for 20 of those years was assistant assessor. "I started at the property assessor's office as a typist, and I have performed every job in the office - up to and including property assessor," she added. "My interest has been and will always be for the citizens of our county and city," she said. "My staff and I work hard to ensure all the work gets completed in a timely manner for the tax books. I am thankful to have hard-working and responsible employees. "We will continue to treat everyone fairly and equally, and ensure they know the laws on Greenbelt and Tax Relief for the Disabled and Elderly," she said. "I have worked through the last five State Reappraisals, which has given me the knowledge and experience, along with my education to know the state laws that affect the appraisals, and will make the proper corrections when necessary."
