Grace Self Compton, 88, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2003, after a period of declining health. She was a native of Del Rio, Tenn. but had lived most of her life in Candler. She was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. Grace was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Dovie Spangler Sorrells and was the wife of the late Perry Self and the late Arnold Compton.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Christine and Bill McClaren, Twila and Raymond Sams and Verba and John Hawkins and two brothers, William and Herman Sorrells. In addition to her children, Grace is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of Faith, Forest Lawn Funeral Home. Mrs. Compton will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the services. Rev. Chris Bradford will be officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Enka.
Grace's purpose in life was to see that her family and friends were always taken care of. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers or food gifts, memorials be made in Grace's loving memory to Mountain Area Hospice, P.O. Box 16, Asheville, NC 28802. Forest Lawn Funeral Home is serving the family of Grace Compton.
