Had any good medicine?
Pharmacist Marty Baily can always be found helping folks at Wilson 's Sav-More Drug Store where his fellow employee Linda Swanger is one of the longest-term workers.

Tired motorists will be rushing to work this week struggling with the abrupt and early change of time in our hometown, as we move closer to the start of spring. Where did the time go? Has it been 23 years since a thin, young Marty Bailey joined Wilson's Sav-Mor Drugs as a new pharmacist? Most of you know him as the son of Reid Bailey-retired Belks store manager-and Melba Bailey. When I dropped by the store, he was stocking merchandise. Many years ago when he finished pharmacy school he was getting married and planning his move from Knoxville back to Newport and that has been a good move. Years ago Butch Ford ran the pharmacy but when Marty joined, the store was located off East Broadway in the building now occupied by District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn. Ruth Hixson was a clerk at the pharmacy and Ruth Wilson was the owner and continues to own the popular drug store, which has moved just north near the railroad tracks. Marty spent about eight years at the old location. The current bricks and mortar building, owned by the McNabbs and now Beth Runnion, was known as Stokely Shults Drug Store operated by Frank Post. Marty agrees that "this is a great location." At 53, he is an accomplished pharmacist, father and brother, too. His older sister, Brenda Kisabeth, is married to Craig Kisabeth's brother, Robert. They live at Valencia, California. Mary's children are grown. Meredith is in graduate school at UT; Malorie works for DisneyWorld in Florida; and Weston attends Tennessee Tech. Marty lives on the family farm off Highway 160 and dates Diane Lyles. He said they enjoy traveling and had recently been to Costa Rica with friends. Those of you who visit Wilson's Sav-Mor probably know all his co-workers. Linda Swanger is the veteran and others include Lisa Giles, Amy Hall, and Tonya Smith. Ruth Wilson's daughter, Amy Murphy, is also a pharmacist at the store. I asked him what's new in the medicine world and he said that Wilson's Sav-Mor is doing more compounding of medicines-like in the old days. He said that a new compound they make is a gel to apply to your skin to prevent nausea. That's a much-needed medication this winter as I have heard of many people suffering with stomach and intestinal viruses.
Last Christmas season, I saw a fellow wandering around Wal-Mart wearing a red Santa Claus cap and discovered it was Don Rector, who we visited and featured. One of his brothers is Dallas Rector. I didn't put the connection together until Dallas made the comment during a February Kiwanis Club meeting that he is a Cocke County native. So, last week I sat down with Dallas at the Holiday Inn to find out more about him. Dallas said he was born in the Salem community near Parrottsville. His Dad was George Washington Rector who was married twice. His second wife, Dallas' Mom, was the former Ruth Ester Holt. George had 11 children. All the Clevenger Mom's daughters-the half-sisters-are deceased. You already know Donald who lives at the home place off Old Sevierville Hwy. Brother Jack Rector lives nearby and is retired from Great Lakes Chemical Corporation, as is Dallas. James lives in Knoxville and Frank is a resident of Wilmington, Delaware. Their sister is Helen (Mrs. James) Coggins.
At 66, Dallas has been retired since 2002, when he was environmental coordinator at the Newport plant shortly before it was closed and sold. I found out that Dallas, who was a lab technician and chemist, worked side-by-side with my late managing editor Dr. Stefan Kouton. Dallas attended Cave Church school when the family lived in the Carson Springs area and he was among the last graduating class at the old Newport high school around 1959. He joined the state Department of Transportation until a stint in the Army from 1963-65. When he returned, he was involved in the construction of both interstates 40 and 81 in our area as a surveyor's assistant. He also worked at American Enka and then joined Chemetron in the late 1960s. His wife is the former Veronica Pritchard, and some of you old timers will know that her father operated a machine shop next to the Gateway Garage-that was Earl Pritchard married to Susie. Dallas has a deceased son, Michael, and Veronica has two daughters: Rhonda of Cookeville and Denise of Charlotte, NC. Dallas is not content to sit around but got involved in Kiwanis and also assists Jim Baker as a bondsman. Until 2002, Dallas and Veronica had lived off Clevenger Cut-Off. During July 4 of that year, a storm hit, causing a fire that destroyed their home. They moved to Baneberry. During her early years Veronica worked with some of you at Enka and Lear Seigler but now spends her time with the six grandchildren.
Marie Bacon must be feeling much better these days. She was riding with her daughter-in-law, Yvonne Bacon, on Tuesday, when she stopped by the Plain Talk office. You recalled that we talked about her family, and I mentioned that she was a Lawhon. Marie explained that her father was Elbert Lawhon of Loudon County. He was a construction worker and was helping to build the large green Huff bridge on the Asheville Hwy. That's when he met Marie's mother, the former Edna Brooks. She is related to L. D. and H.C. Brooks, said Marie, who is a retired nurse.
In plain talk, few of us administer medicine or health care, but the majority of us profit by those with a mind for keeping folks well.
