Jim Burnett passed away on November 7, 2002, at the age of 71.
He is survived by his wife of 49 1/2 years, Sally Mims Burnett; son and daughter-in-law, James H. Burnett, III and Betty Lou, of Brentwood; daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Steve Young, of Knoxville; grandchildren, Anna Louise Burnett, James H. Burnett, IV, William Nathaniel Burnett, of Brentwood, and Rosemary Ann Young, of Knoxville; and sister and brother-in-law, Edith Wells and Whitey Grimes, of Big Canoe, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, J. Horace and Anna Stokely Burnett.
He was a graduate of Mercer University in Macon, Georgia with a B.S. Degree in Economics.
He retired after 36 years with Quaker Oats and Stokely Van Camp having served as Manager of the Distribution Center.
He served his country for 30 years in the United States Army and Tennessee National Guard, retiring with the rank of Major.
He held great interest in politics and was active in the Republican Party. He served four terms as an Alderman in Newport.
He felt strongly about civic responsibility, giving generously of his time and energy. Over the years he served as President of the Kiwanis Club, Chairman and Secretary of the Newport Utilities Board, Director of the National Bank of Newport, Treasurer of the Cocke County Industrial Board, Member of the Cocke County Museum Board, Member of the Nolichucky Regional Library Board and Treasurer of the Cocke County Library Board.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Newport, the Sons of the Revolution and the First Families of Tennessee.
His hobbies included collecting railroad memorabilia and riding trains throughout the world. He was an accomplished amateur photographer and an avid fan of all University of Tennessee Athletics.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Stokely Memorial Library or Music Ministry of the First United Methodist Church of Newport.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Fredrick Long officiating.
