Anna Stokely Burnett, the first female deacon in Newport and a legend during her own time died Friday at age 91.
Before breaking her leg a few weeks ago, it was not uncommon to see Mrs. Burnett cruising about town to First Baptist Church and local plays in her 1978 Chevy Caprice Classic. It ran well with only 30,000 miles on it, relatives said.
She dedicated her life to humanitarian causes and seldom seemed to run out of steam. Her interest in young people, education and church brought her much respect and admiration in the community.
"She was very special," said Edith Burnett Grimes, her daughter and one of several suvivors. "She was brought up in that tradition . . . giving, helping. Her sisters were the same. She liked young people and was active in the PTA."
Anna Stokely Burnett was all smiles and blush three years ago when asked to be Grand Marshal for the local Christmas parade. "She was so pleased by that," Grimes said.
Despite her age, the late Burnett continued to be active. She rooted for the UT Volunteers and kept a keen eye on other sporting events as well as national and international news.
Anna Stokely Burnett was a UT graduate and played on the basketball team. She also was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Society.
Among the colorful hats she wore throughout her life, she was a charter member of the William Cocke Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and chairman of the Cancer Crusade.
Another of her lifelong projects was the development and improvement of the local library. She was instrumental in acquiring the new building for the library, which was named Stokely Memorial Library in honor of her family.
After she broke her leg, Anna Stokely Burnett began to develop complications and her health deteriorated.
Funeral services are scheduled for 4 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Charlie Boggan and Dr. Charles Starks officiating. She will be buried in Union Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 4 p.m. prior to services.
