August 3, 1926 - April 23, 2015 Resided in Sevierville, TN Betty "Jane" Caldwell Woods, 88, who along with her husband Tom Woods were instrumental in growing Gatlinburg into a tourist destination, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2015 at home with her children. Jane is from Paris, Tennessee. She attended Murray State University where she met and married Tom Woods. The Woods' came to Gatlinburg in 1950 and managed the Mountain View Hotel for 37 years. They were instrumental in the creation of the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce. Jane was a model in many of Gatlinburg's early travel logs. She was also a model for National Geographic article: "Pack Trip Through the Smokies" October 1952. Jane opened "The Fair Lady" in 1970, one of the original shops in "The Village". For years they had "Woods Whiskey and Wine" in Windmill Towne. The Woods have been long-time members of the Gatlinburg Methodist Church. Jane is survived by her daughters: Tana and husband Mike Dohoney, Lisa and husband Vern Hippensteal,. Mitzi and husband Dale Wilson; her grandchildren: Molly and husband Nick Holland, Katie and husband Will Brown, Mattie and husband Chris Rasnake, Woods Hippensteal, Jessica Wilson, and Jennifer Wilson; her great-grandchildren: Adyson Holland, Bella Rasnake, Patrick Holland and Finn Brown; her brother: Mike Caldwell; her sister-in-law: Ann Caldwell and her brother-in-law: Bob Collins. Jane is preceded in death by her loving husband and dance partner: Thomas O. Woods; her parents: Margaret Bowles Caldwell and Alf Caldwell, Sheriff of Henry County, TN; her brothers: Joseph Caldwell and Bill Caldwell; her sisters: Mattie Thrall, Frances Tidwell and Margaret Ann Collins. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Hope Good Shepherd Clinic, 312 Prince Street, Sevierville, TN 37862. Funeral service 4 PM Sunday at First United Methodist Church, Gatlinburg Rev. Dan Moore and Rev. Larry Dial officiating. Interment will follow in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens.
