Green River, Wyoming-Joseph C. Cates, 59, of Green River, died at 6:14 p.m., Thursday, January 31, 2002 at his home after lengthy illness.
He was born on January 28, 1943 in Hartford, Tennessee, the son of Lacey and Rebecca Coggins Cates. Joseph attended schools in Hartford, Tennessee. He married Pat Cates and they were later divorced. On July 20, 1991, Joseph married Detra Ross in Green River, Wyoming.
Joseph had worked as a heavy crane operator. He has owned and operated Cates Rental at Cowboy Corner since 1996. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
Joseph was a member of the Hilltop Baptist Church, the American Legion and VFW.
His interests included music, as he was an accomplished musician and songwriter, boating, animals and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Detra of Green River; four daughters, Jill Cates of Arkansas, Lara Jergins of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Leah Yates and husband Willie of Rock Springs, Wyoming, and Suzanne Storrer and husband Ted of Ogden, Utah; five sons, Jay Cates of Arkansas, Patrick Jergins of Wamsutter, Wyoming, Dalen Jergins of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Vance Jergins of Kansas City, Missouri and Shawn Ross and wife Ann of Hot Springs, Arkansas; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Doris Proffitt and one brother, Mike Cates.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 4, 2002, at the Hilltop Baptist Church, 405 Faith Drive, Green River, Wyoming. Family and friends may call 6-8:00 p.m., Sunday, February 3, 2002, at Fox Funeral Home, 2800 Commercial Way, Rock Springs, Wyoming, and Monday, one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery, Green River, Wyoming.
