Died: 07-01-2001 Wayne (Buster) Phillips, age 76, of Newport, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, July 1, 2001.
He was Veteran of WWII having served in the US Army. He was a member of Riverview Baptist Church and a member of Newport Masonic Lodge #234.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mae Phillips, of Maryville.
He is survived by his companion, Ann Phillips, of Newport; daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Vondie Costner, of Cosby, Brenda and George Gates, of Cosby; son, Earl Phillips, of Cosby, sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Johnnie Mae Phillips, of Cosby, Carl and Marilyn Phillips, of Texas, Bobby and Kay Phillips, of Sevierville; and the mother of his children, Ida Phillips, of Cosby; step-son, Jeff Ball; grandchildren, Johnny Costner, Renee Gates, Lacy Gates, Octavia Lee, Karla Phillips, and Denise Lipman; step-grandson, Matthew Ball; great-grandchildren, Tristian Phillips-Ramsey, Brianna Lee, Chelsea Costner, Marlea Costner, and Chase Lipman; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carrie and Goldman McMillion, of NC, Dorothy (Sug) and Frank Milen, of Clinton; sisters, Eula Freeman and special friend, George Bryant, of Newport, Joyce Denton, of Maryville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Flora Phillips, of Clinton, John (Toot) and Carrie Phillips, of Cosby, Philip (Manny) and Mildred Phillips, of Maryville, Clarence (Purt) and Janella Phillips, of Maryville, Walter (Sambo) and Nancy Phillips, of Maryville.
The funeral was held 8 p.m., Monday, at Manes Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Alvin Watts and Rev. Ransom Hall officiating, with burial 2 p.m., Tuesday, at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, with L/Cpl Charles C. Roberts DAV Chapter 102 conducting military rites.
Pallbearers will be Vondie Costner, Johnny Costner, George Gates, Lacy Gates, D.C. Ramsey, and Ronnie Phillips. Honorary pallbearers will be Renee Gates, Karla Phillips, Octavia Lee, Teresa Costner, Denise Lipman and Bert McGaha.
The family received friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Monday, prior to the funeral at Manes Funeral Home.
