Most motorists had to pry open frozen doors or kick the ice off mid-week when the temperature fell into the teens just before Christmas in our hometown. All is warmer and quieter now.
One of the benefits of visiting many restaurants is the people you get to see and greet. For example, last month while eating breakfast at Cracker Barrel I saw a familiar woman. It was Geneva (Webb) Ball, who you know from Arbyˇ¦s years past. She had to retire for health reasons but seems to be doing well. With her were granddaughter Jackie Fontes and a new foster baby, Noah, born Nov. 1. Jackie and Armando Fontes raise three childrenˇVnow, that will create an appetite.
When subscribers renew their Plain Talk with us, the forms have a spot for comments and we get rated on our delivery service and news content. We get some good ideas too. I looked at a recent renewal notice from Catherine Bush of Sheila Drive. My first thought was the family might be related either to: 1) President George Bush; 2) the Bush Brothers cannery founders. So, I called to find out. Jack Bush answeredˇVson of my late friend and National Bank of Tenn. director Jack T. Bush. The Newport Bush family alerted us that their sons were doing well in the music business. We hope to feature them and their successes. Kristian, 35, is co-founder, singer-songwriter for Sugarland. This group recently won an American Music Award for favorite new group in the US. Sugarland was nominated for three County Music Awards and performed at the ceremony in New York, attended by Catherine and Jack Bush. Brandon, 33, is the keyboard player for TrainˇVa Grammy Award-winning group.
Jack is my age, 61, and married a Georgia girl related to the Maples family of Sevierville. He retired from Austin Companyˇ¦s food processing facility in Mullin, S.C. This company is famous for making the military rations that probably sustained many a local member of the 278th National Guard. Jack was hired by Robert Austin many years ago. Like many of you, he loves Volunteer football. Catherine grew up with Jackˇ¦s sister, Charlotte, of Knoxville but is from Chestnut Hill. And thatˇ¦s the connection I knew because her father was the late Stanley Norris, who helped start the Chestnut Hill Charity Horse Shoe. Jack T. Bush was also involved. Young Jack said he thinks his sons inherited their musical ability from Jack T.ˇ¦s mother, Vera Bush, affectionately know as the ˇ§Cookie Ma.ˇ¨ She was a music teacher. Jack T and his wife, Jean, were well known in Newport and died in February within 19 days of each other. Iˇ¦m proud to know that there are tremendously talented folks like the Bush boys and their bands who hail from these mountains.
