Pigeon Forge teacher dies in Georgia wreck
JEFF FARRELL
PIGEON FORGE —
Students and staff at Pigeon Forge Primary School are mourning the loss of a faculty member after first-grade teacher Janel Buice reportedly died in a wreck in Georgia over the holiday weekend.
Buice was in a car with her husband, Nathan, in Tucker, Ga., when he apparently swerved to avoid a deer sometime Saturday between 11 p.m. and midnight, according to a spokesman for the Dekalb County Police Department.
The car rolled down an embankment, overturning and coming to rest against a tree and leaving the two trapped inside in a position where the car couldn't be seen from the road. Nathan Buice was eventually able to get out of the car and flag down a passerby around 8 a.m. Sunday, according to police.
First responders were unable to revive Janel Buice when they arrived; Nathan Buice was reportedly taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. His condition was not available Monday.
Buice had been teaching at Pigeon Forge Primary since last year, and had also taught at Sevierville Primary School several years perviously.
“The principal has been working today with the students there at Pigeon Forge Primary who were in her classroom,” Sevier County school spokesperson Debra Cline said. “We have provided grief counselors today, and they had called the parents yesterday who have children in her room.
Her coworkers were also devastated by the news, Cline said.
“Their hearts are broken...Janel was a marvelous teacher who gave a tremendous amount of time and energy and love and commitment to her work as teacher."
It is the latest tragedy to strike Buice's family in recent years. Her nephew, Regen Morris, died last Christmas after a struggling with cancer for a year.
The Sevier County community held several rallies for Morris over the year after his family started a Facebook page, Rootin' For Regen, so his friends could offer support and encouragement.
“We just need to have thoughts and prayers for (Buice's) family.” Pigeon Forge Primary Principal Connie Cottongim said.
