Ralph Ellis Duggan obituary
- [S4] Knoxville News-Sentinel (Tennessee), 25 Sep 2009.
DUGGAN, MARY C. BURKHART - was born March 14, 1931, and the King commanded her spirit to be free on September 23, 2009, at her home. Free of the Alzheimer's that robs so many of so much, free of the pain of cancer, and free of the problems brought on by COPD. She is now free to sit at the right hand of God after being greeted with: "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." (Matthew 25:21). Mary was born in Knoxville in 1931 to the late Etta and Bill Burkhart. She and her beloved husband Ralph moved to California in 1965. Upon his death in 2001, Ralph was returned to Knoxville and was laid to rest in Lynnhurst Cemetery. Mary returned to live her final years in Knoxville in 2004. In October 2007, Mary moved in with George and Paul, where she enjoyed her favorite music, especially Roy Acuff and Jim Reeves; and many telephone calls from loved ones. Mary will be laid to rest next to Ralph on September 27th, and will be free to join him once again. Mary was a very loving wife and Mother. She possessed a keen sense of humor and a great wit. Mary and Ralph made, and kept, many friends over the years. Mary leaves to mourn her passing, her children: Etta Louise McGill of Mesa, Arizona, Ann Hensley of Knoxville, Ralph Duggan, Jr of San Antonio, Texas, George Duggan of Knoxville, and Judy Harrison-Bowman, of Atlanta, Georgia. Her two brothers, Stanley and George Burkhart, also survive Mary. Mary also leaves special family members: Paul Novis Duggan of Knoxville, June Morgan of Knoxville; a very loving aunt, Elsie Medlin, of Ohio, Matt, Jeannie and Sophie Medlin, of Ohio; and a very special sister-in-law; Polly Duggan of North Carolina. Mary leaves many other loving family members and dear long time friends: Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Sherman, Mrs. Shirley Hanggie, Ms. Afsaneh Ardjmand, and Luke Durocher, all of California, Vance and Nordeen Weisheit of Connecticut, Phyliss Novis, of Hastings, England, Dorothy A. Dahl of Knoxville; and special long time companion Charlie T. Bear, and a host of other special friends and numerous nieces and nephews, and grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren. The family would also like to extend their thanks to Dr. Kent and Lane Van Arsdell for their kindness, help and consideration, as well as the staff of Covenant Home Health and Hospice, and to Patsy Bailey, of Bright Star HealthCare, Mom's nurse, and our friend. In lieu of flowers and plants, the family would appreciate it if you would make a donation to the Bill Morgan Community Playground at: Strawberry Plains United Methodist Church, 3173 W. Old Andrew Johnson Highway, Strawberry Plains, TN. 37871 in Mary's memory. The family will receive family and friends on Saturday, September 26th from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m, at the Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel; with a funeral service to follow. On Sunday, September 27th, family and friends will meet at the chapel of Lynnhurst for a final hour of visitation beginning at 1:00 pm. After which, a procession will proceed to the gravesite.
