Richard Carter Harper-age 79 “Coach Harper” of Knoxville went to be with the Lord from his home surrounded by family and loved ones Thursday, March 4, 2010. He was a graduate of Central High School class of 1949, served in the United States Army during the Korean War, a glazier and member of United Painters and Allied Trades Union and was a baseball/basketball coach and commissioner at Alice Bell Recreation Center for over 20 years during which time he touched the lives of many people. He is preceded in death by his first wife Freda Justice Harper and son Richard “Little Ricky” Harper Jr. who perished in the 1964 airplane crash at Parrottsville, Tennessee. He is survived by his wife Minnie Ogle Harper; sons Michael A. Harper and wife Cherly, Mark D. Harper and wife Rachael; grandchildren Samantha and Misty; nephew Jim Harper and his family and also several sisters-in-law. Visitation services will be Monday, March 8, 2010 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Highland South Memorial Park Chapel with the funeral service to follow at 7 p.m. with Rev. Clarence Lane officiating. Family and friends will gather at 12 noon on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at Highland South Memorial Park Chapel to proceed to Lynnhurst Cemetery for 1 p.m. interment services.
