Allen, John Alexander, 78, died on October 8, 2014 at home, with his wife and daughter by his side, from pancreatic cancer. He was an honest, honorable, trustworthy and faithful member of Valley Grove Baptist Church. He proudly served in the Air National Guard Reserve for several years. John was stationed in Drew, France during the Berlin Crisis in 1961-1962. He was employed in the banking business, retiring from Valley Fidelity Bank as Operations Manager, and graduated from the University of Tennessee. He was respectfully known as the "Okra Man" for raising, marketing and distributing to his community and surrounding communities through Food City. John was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Edith Allen, and his beloved daughter, Mary Alice Allen. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Johnnie (Ogle); daughter, Nancy Allen Lindsay; two special granddaughters, Katie Lindsay and Kelsie Lindsay; and many other extended family members, including Johnnie's sisters, Ina Lane, Vita Flyn and husband Tommy, Minnie Harper, Lucille Hatcher, and sister-in-law, Vea Ogle. He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, good neighbors and church family. The family wishes to thank and to gratefully acknowledge his physician, Dr. Richard Grapski for his expertise and the very high standard of care John received. The family also thanks Caris Hospice Healthcare staff for their very excellent, kind and caring service-especially his case manager and caregivers, Wendy, Melissa Ott, Melinda, Kelly and April. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 13, 2014 from 4:30-6:30pm at Valley Grove Baptist Church. A service will follow at 6:30 with Rev. David Ott and Rev. Keith Vaughn officiating. Family and friends will meet on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at Boyd's Creek Cemetery for a 10:00am graveside service. Condolences may be offered at www.berryfuneralhome.com.
