Jack Shepherd, former City Recorder and well-known educator, dies
Author: Duay O'Neil
NEWPORT-Jack Shepherd, former City Recorder of Newport and a long-time Cocke County educator, died Tuesday in Jefferson City following a long period of declining health.
Shepherd was elected to the office of City Recorder in 1983 and was re-elected to several terms, retiring only after a debilitating stroke nine years ago.
Prior to entering the political area, Shepherd had established himself as a well-known and successful educator, beginning at a history teacher at Parrottsville High School in the late 1960s and later was named principal at Northport Elementary School.
After that school was consolidated into present-day Northwest Elementary, Shepherd was named principal of Grassy Fork Elementary School, where he served until elected to public office.
Born in Newport on May 29, 1944, Shepherd was the older of two sons of Jack Harold and Mary Belle (Ottinger) Shepherd.
He attended Newport Grammar School and graduated from Cocke County High School in 1962.
When he was in high school, his parents and younger brother, the late Russell Shepherd, moved to Nashville where his father accepted a job with the Tennessee Department of Labor. Rather than move to Nashville, Shepherd opted to remain in Newport and lived with his grandparents, the late Judge George R. Shepherd and Laura Williams Shepherd.
He later earned his degree in history from Carson-Newman College and worked for a short time at Stokely’s.
Through his love of history, Shepherd developed an outstanding collection of Native American artifacts, Cocke County memorabilia, and other items.
He was also a member of the Hard Times Car Club and, at one time, owned a 1937 Ford and a 1940 Ford. The 1937 model once won national honors.
He also loved hunting and ? shing and was also a former member of the Bass Club.
He was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of Newport.
Shepherd is survived by a daughter, Kim, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Thursday evening at Manes Funeral Home with Rev. Alvin Watts officiating. Interment will be held Friday afternoon in Union Cemetery.
