U.S. Veteran Frank Harrison Gorman, Sr. passed away Saturday, December 9, 2006 from a stroke that occurred the day prior. Frank was a Retired Army Captain in World War II. He served in the European Theater of Operation with the Sixth Armored division. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Battalion Letter of Commendation for Superior Leadership in Combat and Four Campaign Medals with 2 Battle Stars. Frank was a Life member of the The Retired Officers Association, Life Member of the V F W, and a member of the American Legion. While not a member at his death, he had been a member of the Newport Lions Club for 38 years, and had served in every local club office and every District office. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church, a church which he helped to found in 1970. He was a lifelong Sunday School Teacher, teaching his first class at the age of 17 at Newport First Baptist Church where he was a member for 46 years. He served 18 years as Church Training Union Director at First Baptist Church, as well as the East Tennessee Baptist Association. He Served 2 years as President of the Tennessee Church Training Union Department.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty; by 3 children, Barbara Gorman of Frisco, Texas; Dr. Frank H. Gorman, Jr. of Muncie, Indiana; Brian C. Gorman of Dallastown, Pennsylvania; 6 grandchildren, Lisa Hukill of Frisco, Texas; George Honsaker of Frisco, Texas; Melissa Merrill of Jacksonville, North Carolina; Zachary Gorman of Jacksonville, North Carolina; Logan Gorman of Dallastown, Pennsylvania; Clare Gorman of Dallastown, Pennsylvania; 5 great grandchildren, Kasey Gorman of Jacksonville, North Carolina; Hanna Honsaker of Frisco, Texas; Max Honsaker of Frisco, Texas; Cooper Hukill of Frisco, Texas; Harrison Merrill of Jacksonville, North Carolina; brother, Young John Gorman of Maryville, Tennessee.
The family will receive friends at Manes Funeral Home from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Wednesday, December 13, 2006, with a Memorial Service at 8:00pm, Dr. Craig Ward officiating. Military Graveside Services will be held 11:00 am, Thursday, December 14, 2006 in Union Cemetery with L/Cpl Charles C. Roberts DAV Chapter 102 conducting military rites. Memorial Gifts may be made to Southside Baptist Church, P.O. Box 668, Newport, TN 37821.
