Born in Newport, TN, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Ella Burgess Shelton. She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. Surviving are her husband, Gilbert G. Merrill of the home; a daughter, Diane M. Thomas; three sons, Michael, Gary and Mark; eight grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Shelton Hopkins; a brother, Arthur Shelton of Newport. The funeral was held on Thursday, December 13, 2007 at the Thomas McAbee Funeral Home in Greeneville, S.C.
