- [S142] Newspaper Article, Skagit Valley Herald (Mount Vernon, WA), 20 Jun 2014.
On June 3, 2014 James William Self lost his battle with Lou Gerhigs Desease, and the gates of heaven opened wide to receive one of the best men the earth had been blessed with.
James lost his wife, Kathleen (Iversen) Self on March 29, 2014, daughter of Martin Iversen and Kathleen (Nihill) Iversen, born June 20, 1943, ending the bond they shared for almost fifty years. James was born to Charlie Rowe Self and Willie Mae (Grigsby) Self on December 14, 1939.
James and Kathleen raised their three children in Burlington at their family home where they resided from 1969 until 2004, when they retired to Tennessee to be closer to James 's extended family. James retired from the Burlington School District and Kathleen, a 1962 graduate of Sedro-Woolley High School, from her own beauty shop.
They are survived by their daughters; April (Rick) Soria and Robin Self, daughter-in-law Stacy (Grover) Shipman, fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. James 's siblings: Nellie (Wayne) Pressley, Carol (John) Mollar and Melvin (Ruby) Self, sister-in-law Brook Self; Kathleen's siblings: Rick (Ginny) Iversen, her twin sister Nileen Brewer, Andrew (Annette) Iversen and Susan (Kevin) Sipe, as well as numerous nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
They were proceeded in death by their son Shawn William Self, James 's sister Wanda Armstrong, and both sets of their parents.
Our parents were both cremated and over the next several months their ashes will be spread in all the places they loved to spend time including: Newport, Tennessee, Grandy Creek, Thunder Creek, Baker Lake, Samish Island, Pumpkin Center, and the Canadian side of Ross Lake.
