Mr. Bill Jesse “Bud” Baxter, age 66, of Newport, passed away February 7, 2001.
Always known as “Bud” to his many friends, he was an avid outdoors man, hunter, trapper, and fisherman. He claimed he was born and “half-raised” in the Ground Hog Community of Bluffton before moving to the city. He loved to fly fish and knew every trout stream in the East Tennessee mountains like the back of his hand. He shared his love for the mountains with others, and with a select few, he shared his secrets for catching trophy trout.
A lifetime resident of Newport, Bud worked for several years at the Enka Corporation, later in the warehouse business in Knoxville, and retired from Quaker after more than twenty-two years as a shipping foreman. He was a loving father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane McNabb Baxter; father, Lester “Lec” Baxter; and brother, David Bruce Baxter.
Survivors include his mother, Wilma Baxter; sons, Lester Russell Baxter, of Pensacola, Florida, and David Keith Baxter; daughter, Lisa Baxter; sisters, Barbara Campbell and Linda Clevenger; and long-time friend and companion, Lorene Gentry, all of Newport; grandchildren, Matthew, Lucas, Jessica, Jacob and Jordan Baxter; and special grandchild, Codi Walker.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, February 10, at Manes Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Earl Campbell officiating, with burial in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Calfee, Ennis Gentry, Lucas Baxter, Bill Walker, Jimmy Walker, and Junior Walker.
Honorary pallbearers are L.C. Gentry, Matthew Baxter, Stanley McNabb, and Keith McNabb.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., Friday, at Manes Funeral Home.
Manes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
