Thompson named Director at Newport Grammar
Author: Duay O'Neil
NEWPORT-Current Newport Grammar School Curriculum Director Steve Thompson will become Newport Board of Education Director of Schools on July 1. On a motion by Newport Board of Education member Jan Sneed, seconded by member Bobby Smith, Thompson was unanimously approved as the interim director by the board during a called meeting Monday at Newport Grammar School. Thompson replaces David Bible, current director, whose retirement will become effective June 30. Thompson, a veteran educator, is the son of L. A. and Edith Thompson, Newport, and an alumnus of NGS and Cocke County High School. He later earned his B.S., M.A., and EdD degrees from East Tennessee State University, the latter two in School Administration and Supervision. He comes to the job with 38 years experience, beginning as a teacher at Edgemont Elementary School. He later was named first principal of the newly-finished Parrottsville Elementary School, a job he held for 10 years. He then transferred to the Cocke County Central Office as Special Education Director, a position he filled for 16 years. Following his retirement from the state educational system, he spent the next five years as a teacher at All Saints Episcopal School in Morristown and the Episcopal School of Knoxville. For the past three years, he has been Curriculum Supervisor at NGS.Thompson will come out of retirement in order to accept this position. Thompson has two sons, Stephen, an Intensive Care Pediatrics Nurse Practitioner living in Worcester, Mass., and Jonathan, currently serving a tour of duty with the US Army in Baghdad, Iraq. He has three grandchildren. His salary, according to Smith, will be the same as that of current director Bible. In answer to board member Mickey Powers' question, Smith said that Thompson's current position would not be filled."Steve said he could do both jobs," said Smith, "and that will save us some money." In other business, the board unanimously approved the 2000/2010 budget as presented by Smith. Prior to moving to accept the budget, Smith explained that he based it on available figures from such sources as this year's sales tax and county property tax revenues ($535,000 and $385,000, respectively), the tuition the system receives from county students, an estimated $82,500, and other state and federal sources. "It's pretty much based on this year's record," said Smith. "We have not final BEP fund amount for next year. The May estimate was $3,202,000, but there will be very little, if any, increase for next year." Smith said the funding for the system's two Pre-K classes will remain the same for next year. "There will be no raises at this time," he continued. "If sales tax collections hold up, the board could, in December, consider raises."Smith announced three added positions had been included in the budget: a half-time physical education instructor to alleviate the current overcrowded conditions, a full-time position for seventh-eighth grade language arts, and a half-time assistant principal. "We've had to use a little of our fund balance," said Smith, "but we have a good fund balance. We need to close the books on this year. I've tried to be conservative." The board accepted a bid of $2,500 from B&D Lawn Care to sod the banks near College Street. The other bid received was for $5,480 from Williams Lawn Care. The board renewed a mowing contract with B&D Lawn Care at the same price of $395.99 per mowing. Judy Starnes was approved as a volunteer for the SHARP Kids Program, and two walking field trips for Debbie Shults' summer school students were approved.
