Burial services for accident victim set for today
Author: Duay O'Neil
NEWPORT-Burial services are set for 11 a.m. this morning in Newport's Union Cemetery for Jean Herndon Clevenger, a Newport woman who died from injuries sustained in a car-truck accident Friday afternoon.
Clevenger, 81, was a passenger in a car driven by her son, Bryson Clevenger, Jr., Charlottesville, VA, which collided with an International tractor-trailer driven by Roy Ball, 59, Rutledge.
The accident occurred in Dandridge late Friday afternoon at the intersection of Dandridge Pike with West Highway 25/70.
Clevenger was flown from the accident to UT Medical Center in Knoxville where she died soon after arrival.
Bryson Clevenger and Ball were also taken to UT Medical Center for treatment and later discharged.
Clevenger, daughter of the late John and Lois (Lindsey) Herndon, was a native of Newport and the widow of Bryson Edward Clevenger.
She returned to Newport a few years ago and resided at Iris Place.
A member of the Newport Presbyterian Church, she was retired from Proffitt's Clothing Store after working there 23 years as a department manager.
She was a dedicated genealogist, who loved sharing pictures and stories of her family history with family and friends. She was a descendant of several of Cocke County's earliest settlers, including the Vinsons, Webbs, Dillons, and Lindseys.
Shortly before the accident, she had stopped by the Plain Talk office to collect information she had submitted for publication in the paper's recent "A Place Called Home" special edition and had shared plans to submit additional material for the January, 2009 follow-up issue.
Clevenger's survivors include two sons and one daughter, one grandson, and two brothers.
