The estate of the late Hobart Ford, a dentist and former state legislature member from Newport, will be auctioned Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
According to auctioneer John Coker, the estate has a lot of antiques, collectibles, and memorabilia.
“The Fords were big into baseball,” said Coker. “We have a lot of collectibles from several baseball teams.”
Ford’s son, Alfred Ford, said his father was part owner of a lot of baseball teams.
“He was part owner of the Charlotte Hornetts, the Knoxville Smokies, and the Newport Canners,” he said. “He also owned teams in places like Morristown and Greenville, SC.”
Ford said that growing up in the house was a lot of fun.
“All the kids in the neighborhood would come over and play sports in the yard,” he said. “I can remember as many as 24 kids staying to eat. We would eat in shifts. A lot of professional baseball players would come and stay with us.”
Ford said that many other items his family owned are for sale, with the exception of the house and some special memorabilia, such as his father’s legislature desk.
Coker said the Fords also collected books and artifacts about Newport.
“The Fords were very prominent and were also big into politics. We have a lot of political items,” said Coker. “We also have a like-new 1991 Buick with only 5,800 miles on it, a Wurlitzer baby grand piano, a mahogany dining room table, a 1920s University of Tennessee sweater, a variety of 125-year-old quilts, a peer mirror, a glass daisy churn, some Roseville pottery, a leather recliner, books, jewelry, and other items too numerous to mention.”
He said the items can be previewed beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
“We invite everyone to come out and have a good time,” said Coker. “Bring a chair, visit with the family, and eat. Seay’s Country Store will be catering.”
He said the auction will be located at 105 Highway 73, at the intersection of Highway 73 and Highway 25/70.
