Cold air and cool rain on Thursday caused the tall golden rods to hang their heavy yellow heads along the roadsides in our hometown. Perhaps the harvest street festival will cheer them up.
Folks were out and about whether the warm days or colder ones. I bumped into Tom Shelton, who recognized me from the Plain Talk where he helped Ralph Kyker fix plumbing in years past. Shelton is in business for himself after Kyker retired.
About the same time, I saw Scott McClure shopping, and days earlier I had talked with his youngest child while renewing my vehicle tag at County Clerk Jan Butler¡¦s office on Monday. She is Kalee Benson, one of four McClure children. Perhaps we¡¦ll get back to chat.
You recall last week we mentioned wandering downtown and visiting The Mountain Side Outdoor Shop. When I pulled off McSween Avenue, the first thing I spotted was Edsel¡¦s Barbershop. I must admit that I can¡¦t recall visiting. Walking in, barber Edsel Hall, a tall, lean fellow was preparing John Samples for a haircut. Hall chided me for never putting his photo in the Plain Talk during past Hall reunions and when he worked for a custom van shop years ago. So, you see his photo here and should know that with 53 years clipping hair and shaving folks, he is the senior barber of Cocke County. He still uses a straight razor.
An old timer was sitting in one of the line of chairs along the wall. Two signs above the mirrored wall stated: ¡§No Smoking¡¨ and ¡§Haircuts $5.¡¨ The old timer was Austin Hopkins. I¡¦m sure many of you know him and his relatives such as cousin ¡§Hoppy¡¨ Hopkins and the late Hobart Ford Sr. At 79, he is a few years older than his good friend Edsel, who turns 75 on Nov. 15.
Austin was born in Hartford but lives in Middle Tenn. He is the son of Fletch Hopkins and the former Alice Naillon. Like most of the seniors his age, he is a World War II veteran serving as a combat engineer and getting ¡§shot up¡¨ in Germany. The most interesting part of his career started after the war when in California he learned to fly. He flew crop dusters for about 20 years in Alabama where he crashed a couple of times ¡§but never got killed.¡¨ While chatting, John left and Luther Taylor, a retired teacher came in. By then, Edsel and Austin were talking about music and their Martin guitars. So, Austin goes to his vehicle and brings back his HD 28 and starts strumming and serenading the customer. I must talk with him some more and Edsel too, as both are keenly interesting men. I believe Austin is right when he said, ¡§I guarantee I ain¡¦t going to die young.¡¨ Those raised in the Brown¡¦s community will know him and his folks. I¡¦ll share this one tale he told of the other Edsel, Edsel Ford. It seems that Edsel and brother, Henry, were traveling out of state when stopped by a big, gruff Carolina State trooper. He asked Edsel his name. Of course the trooper smirked and said, ¡§I suppose you¡¦re going to tell me that your sleeping friend is Henry Ford.¡¨
Across the street at the yellow-painted Mountain Side, Jeramy Hux was thinking about the street festival and neat things to improve his business like paint a giant mural on the wall of the McNabb building facing East Broadway. At 31 he is a young, energetic businessman the son of Terry and Debbie (Grooms) Hux, of Newport. An only child, he graduated from Cocke County High School and also Emory and Henry studying land use planning. He put that to practical use by opening a unique store packed with a variety of camping, hiking, biking and water sports merchandise. I asked him who you might find shopping there, and customers include visitors to the Smokies and locals like the Ben Hoopers, Mike Kyker, and Iliff McMahan. Nov. will be the store¡¦s first anniversary and he has succeeded in creating something new and interesting as a focal point for downtown. He is encouraging other small businesses to follow suit. He¡¦s been a Pigeon River guide for a decade and also loves mountain biking and caving. One of his current projects is working with Gay Webb, Cody Phillips, and Kevin McConnell to convince the US Forest Service to invest some money and their time in building hiking trails here in the Cherokee Forest.
Another reason he opened the shop was to show people what¡¦s out there by bringing it here¡Vgood quality merchandise for serious outdoors folks. He¡¦s even got a tent set up and a great variety of stuff from wallets to caps, back packs, boots, socks and all the big and little things that make outdoor sports more fun.
He hopes the Mountain Side will be a focal point for like-minded folks or those newly interested to get help. (A woman dropped by to spread the word that a mother bear had cubs with her at Walnut Bottoms and hikers needed to be wary.) Jeramy has a lot of enthusiasm and ideas that should make our hometown a better place and certainly help folks be healthier.
In plain talk, youth offers insights and vitality often lost along the years of constant repetition.
